I can't recall a black Bears uniform. (I just looked it up. They wore one for the first half of the '40s.)

These were the ones I was thinking of. The "bumblebee" jerseys.

Yeah, I've always liked Pittsburgh's uniforms, probably because the first Pop Warner team I was on in the early 1980s was the Steelers, but yeah, that Bumblebee look is freaking hideous.

I know. It's even worse on Hampton, who looks like a walking ball of fat in any uniform.

So does the new regime in Jacksonville give up on Blaine Gabbert, a recent first-round pick? Or do they try to salvage something out of his career with a good QB coach?

I don't know that you give up on him quite yet, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they drafted a QB in the second or third round to give him a push. If Gabbert rises to the occasion, great, if he doesn't, oh well...

They definitely should not feel any level of confidence in having him as their QB of the future.

His record makes Tebow's look good. Yeah, he's with an awful team, but Gabbert has been wretched.

The Jaguars were rumored to be in the mix for Alex Smith. I don't remember them being mentioned for any of the other quarterbacks who were dealt.

Given the fact the Jaguars are in total rebuilding mode anyway, I'd like to see them give Gabbert an audition for half a season as the No. 1 guy. You already invested a high pick and a lot of money on him; you need to get a clear verdict on whether he can play at that level or not. The only way to do that is to put him out there, like Miami did with Ryan Tannehill and Minnesota with Christian Ponder.

Since there don't seem to be many HOF quarterbacks out there in the draft or free agency this year, give him a shot and if it doesn't pan out, then pick up the pieces next off-season.

IIRC, correctly, teams are allowed by the NFL to have only one alternate jersey. They're also limited in the number of times they can wear it per season.
Some teams have different alternates than black, so they never would wear it. In fact, unless it's changed since Nike came on board, I think the only teams that have black as an official alternate jersey are the Eagles, Ravens and Cardinals. Everybody else uses a secondary team color for the alternate, or a throwback.

I'm not a Jags fan and this plan makes sense to me. Give the guy a chance, especially if you used a high pick on him, and if not, go back to the drawing board.

Only if you think there's someone in this draft who's a franchise QB. If you think there's a guy like that in there, grab him. If not - you'll just go through this whole damn process again for another 3 years. But if you think a franchise guy is there, yeah, we've seen enough Gabbert to go in a different direction.
