After that game, Jerry Jones said, "That particular official gets a lot of criticism. He's a highly criticized official in the NFL." I know Jones is a blowhard, but I recall the common sentiment was that the rest of the league shared Jerrah's views on that one.

Not sure I can agree that the league shares Jerrah's views. He's officiated two Super Bowls and, what, like six or seven league championship games? That means the league has consistently rated him among the top three officials.

Maybe a couple of people have popped off about him making a bad call, and Jerry would certainly be among the first to do that to any official if it meant getting his name in the paper, but it seems Hochuli is usually rated rather highly.

There are any number of refs worse than Hochuli.

Since the 1999-2000 season, counting Sunday's game, Hochuli would have done two Super Bowls and four conference title games. And done the most white hats in the playoffs in that time.

Carey has not done a playoff game yet, though he got shut out two years ago. And if it's Giants-Patriots, I don't think the league will go with him since he did that Super Bowl matchup four years ago.

So far, not getting playoff games have been: Jeff Triplette, Jerome Boger, Mike Carey, Scott Green (not eligible for the Super Bowl; did it two years ago), Terry McAulay (a surprise; he's done two Super Bowls and five conference title games since 2002-03), Walt Coleman (out; going to the Pro Bowl) and Walt Anderson (out; did the Super Bowl last year).

It's possible the Super Bowl white hat would come out of the wild card and/or divisional rounds (though not Tony Corrente because he's restarted cancer treatments), which had been the case for many years up until last year.

And it looks like it's done:

John Parry to white hat the Super Bowl. His first. Was the white hat for Saints-49ers on Saturday.

Shocking to me that Carey didn't get a playoff game.

OK I waded too far into a referee discussion with the experts ... but can you guys tell me how you arrive at this knowledge/obsession? Is there a cult of officialdom that I don't know about, the D&D of the NFL?

I find it hard to believe that the white hat is that big an influence on a game because he's just the guy who announces penalties, so he gets the facetime. I am probably naive but does he get to be the final decision maker on a call? I know he's the lead but its more a question of his crew than him, correct?

For me, nothing will ever top Red Cashen and "Giving him the business."

This was a very good investigative piece by Kent Babb on the negative work environment that has been promoted by Scott Pioli in Kansas City.

I do high school games, and my dad's been a high school football official (did some college too) for 40 years, so I grew up with it and I follow it.

It's just one of those things I tend to notice.

The white hat is just the quarterback of the crew. He probably gets more credit than he deserves for a well-officiated game, and too much blame for a poorly officiated game. But they mostly work with the same crew week-to-week (with maybe a sub here or there), so when you see Mike Carey on the field, you'll generally know to expect a better-officiated game than if you see Jeff Triplette.

I'd love to start a fantasy referee game, though. :D
