Tee Martin won a National Championship. Peyton never did.

Could you show me a citation for a single NFL playoff football game where the winner was Brett Favre?

So it was silly to criticize Elway for not quite realizing his potential. And yet, until he won those Super Bowls, that's exactly how he was treated.

Same as Manning - who has already won a Super Bowl, and been its MVP - is now.

I do not recall Elway being criticized as such.

    Ah, you're playing that game?

Going by "Playoff record as a starting QB," according to PFR, he does have a winning record. But you knew that already.

We understand you're sick, Rick, but does that mean you have to so blatantly troll?

Elway was credited with carrying three subpar teams to the Super Bowl. When he finally had a team that wasn't considered subpar, the Broncos won two titles...

I'm not saying it is fair, but it is the Super Bowl performances that make Manning's reputation. And that was pretty much two passes. He had no business winning the MVP for the first victory against the Patriots. It should have been somebody on that defense.

Most people won't remember the other playoff games. It's like the folks who insisted Ben Roethlisberger was along for the ride in 2005 because he sucked in Super Bowl XL (and there are plenty of them on this site). Nobody remembers that he was outstanding in all three playoff games to get them there.

    Being right isn't trolling.

The bizarre insistence on attributing W-L record in team sports to individuals needs to be scrubbed from the culture, and I'll get us there one post at a time.

Before winning in 97 and 98, in discussions just like this one, Elway was respectfully or wistfully spoken of as one of the best never to win a Super Bowl. He was measured as much by his disappointments as by his achievements. Just as Manning is now.

People remember all about Eli's playoffs -- maybe you don't, but he has won four road playoff games against teams that had a combined 54 regular-season wins.

People also remember the TD to Plax and the whole TD drive from last year. It wasn't just because Tyree got lucky. And if Tyree hadn't gotten lucky and Eli has everything besides that Super Bowl, he is still looked upon quite fondly.
