Ditka appeared in three Super Bowls and was 3-1 in conference championship games?

    Didn't know that. :D

Very true. Probably why Jauron lasted there as long as he did. Lovie too. Trestman has that reputation as well.

I remember laughing my ass off when they made Jauron coach out the last year of his contract and he went 13-3.

Shocking. But hey, you put two dozen cops on retainer, you expect some return on that investment.

Police report and 911 tape remain confidential.

That's a little bit unfair to Ditka. The Bears' peak in the 1980s coincided with that of the Giants, Redskins and 49ers, who also had some all-time great teams in that run. Hell, four of the top 10 teams -- and maybe four of the top five -- of the last 50 years ('84 and '89 Niners, '86 Giants and '85 Bears) were from that period, and that's not even counting the always-solid Redskins and Eagles. The NFC was absolutely loaded back then.

Ditka also had the misfortune of his franchise quarterback (McMahon) getting hurt over and over, and you're not going to win consistently without a great QB.

They drafted Harbaugh to be McMahon's successor, and Harbaugh couldn't even beat out Mike Tomczak.

I agree with that. The 1985 Bears are the best team of my lifetime, but the teams that won the year before (Niners) and after (Giants) were both awesome teams too.

Dungy and Holmgren are two others who I think people feel underachieved by only winning one title with the Colts and Packers.

I agree the conference was loaded.
Even the Rams were a perennial playoff team and a tough out.
But Ditka's teams played in terrible divisions. They needed to have more postseason success.

They won the Central like 6 out of 7 years from 1984-90. The Niners won titles in three of those years, the Giants won once, the Redskins won once and Bears won once.

Really, the only one that got away was the home playoff loss to the Redskins.

On full rest, they lost to weaker Redskins teams and a Dallas team quarterbacked by Steve Beuerlein.
Those teams were too good for those early exits.

Did Flutie start that home playoff loss to Washington?
