Hey, don't lump us all together on that one.

I have been as disgusted as anybody by some of the fines by the NFL this season. The one against Lamarr Woodley for completing a sack of Jason Campbell by twisting him to the ground a few weeks back was an absolute disgrace. But Clark deserves to be fined for the shot on Welker.

  2. Yup,
I'm a total Steelers fanboi, but that was a Grade A cheap shot.

Tomlinson might want to shut up sometime. He whines a hell of a lot about various things and never gets called on it.

He quit on his team last year in the AFC Championship.

Major fucking demerit. Whenever you cast Rivers into a positive light... major demerit.

So what is the difference between the hit Holmes took against the Bengals and the hit Welker took?

And to say the ball was on the ground when Clark left his feet is insane.
The ball was three feet off the ground.

My question is then, what is Clark supposed to do in that situation? He hit him with his shoulder pad. He did not spear him with his helmet. Clark's feet were on the ground when he hit him. When he followed through with the hit he left his feet.

That hit could have been 100 times worse.

Don't throw the slant into a dropped back safety playing a zone if you do not run a route on the sideline to draw him off the slant.

Rare, but I disagree with almost every single word.

The ball was well away from Welker for more than enough time to react.

Welker has taken some hellacious hits this year.

I'm guess that he will start falling off the table production-wise.

I respect your opinion, Simon, but I think a receiver running full speed on a slant in front of the safeties has to expect getting his bell rung. If he runs a hook or sits down in the coverage, he does not take the same hit.

In this day and age of West Coast passing, about the only defense against that pattern is to ring his bell when he catches the ball. Then he will start to slow down when crossing the middle.

You didn't see me screaming when Santonio had his head removed from his shoulders last week against Cincy. Roethlisberger should have been punched in the face for leading his receiver into the safety with the ball.

Clark may have been at fault for keeping his head down making the hit, but if Welker did catch the ball, it would have been a clean hit.

Also, what if the ball, which was tipped and a live ball mind you, was intercepted? Is it still a dirty hit?

I dunno. I know I am arguing for a team I root for, but I hate the way the NFL is becoming a passing league of 23-for-30 with 1 TD 1 INT and 200 yards passing is a bad game for the QB.

    He most definitely does. Legally.

That's basic physics, and does not relate really to the issue. The lapsed time is the issue. And Clark had plenty of it.

    Inarguable among the sane.

Hopefully, having LESS THAN ZERO of a case would contribute to your silence. Holmes CAUGHT the ball and Crocker led with his shoulder.

    Again, off-topic, but yes.
Yes, if Clark had hit Welker a second and a half earlier, there may have been a case. But, again, that wasn't the case.

Defenseless receiver fouls are on the books in the NFL. Still a penalty on its merits.
Perhaps, but unrelated to Clark hit.

That said, I take that penalty every time in trade for the YouTube exposure and the possible future reticence for a foe to go across the middle whole-hog.

But it most definitely WAS a penalty.

Sorry 93Devil, but I've got to agree with Simon on this one. There is no comparison at all between the hit Holmes took and the one Clark put on Welker. Holmes had the ball when he got hit. The ball was nowhere near Welker when Clark hammered him.

There have been some penalties and fines against the Steelers this year that were inappropriate, but Clark deserved the penalty and the fine that should be following it.

One small detail of Simon's post that I do question. He mentioned Cocker (actually, it's Crocker) leading with his shoulder. If I remember correctly, Clark led with his shoulder when he hit Welker, too. Am I remembering that incorrectly?

  11. I would say no.
IMO Clark led with his helmet. Which was another reason I took exception to the hit.

That is not why the flag was thrown. It was thrown because he hit a defenseless receiver away from the ball. I'll have to hit youtube later to see if I can find the replay. I am fairly certain he hit Welker with his shoulder, not his helmet.
