Kaepernick has a better upside... Smith is a pretty good runner, but is not on the level of Kaepernick. I don't think Smith can make some of the throws that Kaepernick has made...

That said, I want to see how Kaepernick responds in a game where they have to come from behind when the defense doesn't produce two quick touchdowns.

I think the two weeks at Seattle and at New England should be telling...

Is Arians the coach of the year?

I think he has to treat carefully there. He wants to play Kaepernick, fine. But if he comes out and says "Alex is the backup", he may well lose him for good. Then, should he need to come back to him in the playoffs (as Belichick did with Drew Bledsoe one year), Alex may well have packed it in.

He did that in the Rams game. The Niners were behind several times. He tied the game both times and then got them into position to win.

If that's the case he has no business playing in the NFL in the first place.

It's going to be interesting. There's part of me that is ecstatic and there's part of me that is worried... I think the Niners now have a better chance to win the Super Bowl, but getting there might now be a little more difficult.

Smith is almost certainly gone after the season.

Time will tell, but he is in the conversation.

And what would the odds have been for him to win COY in June? 10,000 to 1?

If you have a player who can turn chicken shit into chicken salad in the playoffs at QB, you have a decided advantage.

Other than Roethlisberger and Flacco, the Ravens and Steelers have pretty much been equals the past 6-7 years. The big dummy is the difference because of the plays he extends.

I understand that. I don't understand how it can be simultaneously harder to get to the Super Bowl and easier to win it.

That isn't what I was saying. I was saying that worrying whether Smith will "pack it in" shouldn't factor into whether Harbaugh comes out and names Smith the backup QB. I don't for a second think Smith will do that. But if he did, then he's Vince Young and should be selling insurance or something, not playing pro football. He has a career, a team and himself to play for. If telling a guy he's second string destroys him as a player, he's not a guy you can count on to get the job done anyway.
