I've tried. Last year I kind of did that with the Indians, though that was mostly because I had so many Cleveland players on my fantasy teams. I got used to rooting for those players, so I kept doing it in the playoffs. But when they lost, I found I really didn't care that much. It just isn't the same.

Outofplace, your last post contradicts your previous one.

Not being able to watch a game without a wager/fantasy implication may indeed be sad. I don't know. I don't gamble and certainly don't block of time to watch to see how "my guys are doing." The Internet will update me fine later.

But feeling like your life is somehow affected, positively or negatively, by sports on any level, to me isnt just sad but pathetic. There is so much more to life and I feel for those who rely on sports for their escape.

Most fantasy sports competitions ARE gambling. Don't know of many which are wholly bereft of ANY fiscal involvement.

And then, there's more hardcore gambling.

Football has a broader base, but the influence on ratings of those
involved in fantasy leagues and/or pure pointspread indulgence is considerable.

. . . and have zero doubt this is even more true when you start talking about college and pro basketball.

My first statement? The one in which I sarcastically suggest that you are trying desperately to argue that most people feel the way you do just because a few of your friends are the same way? Do you even understand sarcasm?

There is nothing contradictory at all in my post. You just don't agree with it, which is fine. But you aren't even trying to understand the point of view of those who disagree with you.

Where exactly did you see me write or even post anything that suggests that sports is my one escape or the only thing in my life? It is one of the things I enjoy. Maturity is not about giving up the things you enjoy. It is about putting them in perspective.

If sports is so meaningless to you, why are you even reading or posting here?

Well, so far on this week's thread we've had more discussions about "sports gambling" and Super Bowl XL than what actually has been going on this past week. I think it is time for a new thread.

What game was the AP writer watching last night?

From the games notes at the end of the story:

The Vikings have won four straight Monday night games, while the Saints are 8-17 all-time on Monday night.

... Uh, didn't Aaron Rodgers and the Packers defeat the Vikes on the opening MNF this year?

Really? I know more people with seasons than people with FFL teams, and I just spent the weekend with "adult" friends from all over the country -- including a securities analyst from NYC and a guy who owns his own business in LA -- wearing jerseys, drinking beer, and yelling our fool heads off at an NFL game 3,000 miles away from where I live.

As we round out this Week 5 thread, here's a story that says McCain has direct, longstanding ties to gambling.
By the New York Times, no less

This thread is filled with boring grabass every week. These discussions at least are in the zip code of football.
