That's the extreme number I thought I read somewhere. I dont think they have a hope in hell of getting it. Right now I believe it's at 57 per cent. But as with most negotiations you throw the big number out there so that when settle for less you look like you conceded. However I think the owners are looking for a bigger share themselves.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but it seems like the salary cap has jumped considerably every year since the 2004-05 lockout.

I remember in those days the league was real scared that revenue wouldn't come back very fast. They even did stuff like rig the schedule to have teams play 8 games against division rivals and even a lot of back-to-backs against the same team to cut down on travel costs. Once they realized the fans would come back and the TV would come back, they got a little fat and comfortable with the money.

I'm just afraid they are headed down the same road that led to the lockout of 2004-05. Although the salary cap has made life more bearable for small market teams. If you raise the cap too high, small market teams won't be able to keep up again and we'll be back in the same boat.

As someone else pointed out, if Dennis Wideman gets $5.2 million per year, what does a legitimate all-star get?

For arguments sake, I would venture that Tiger Woods is self-employed while a member of a team is an employee of that team and should not be penalized for injury in service to his employer.

    Always a good start.

    I gather Semin signed nowhere?

A lot of teams overpaid foraverage to below average players

Basically nothing has happened. At all. No Parise. No Suter. No Nash deal. Biggest names might be Parenteau to Colorado for 4/16 and Ray Whitney to Dallas for 2/10 (IIRC).

    Edit: No Semin, either.

If NHL, it has been kinda busy.

    -P.A. Parenteau signs with Avs
-Brandon Prust signs with Habs, with Montreal probably overpaying.
    -Ray Whitney signs with Stars
-Jordan Staal signs 10-year, $60 million extension in Raleigh; Joe Corvo re-signs (third tour of duty IIRC) and Justin Peters is re-signed (Cam Ward ... please don't get hurt)
    -Suter, Parise still exploring options

In soccer, what MB said. In a nutshell.

Watched TSN's show from Noon to 3 on NHL Network and when they went off-air, one (or was it 2?) of their top 20 UFAs had signed.
