Nothing says they have to sign on July 1. It's only when GMs and those sorts can officially start kicking the tires. Parise and Suter will have too many suitors to have their minds made up that quickly ... unless their minds were already made up.

Rick Nash? Not until Columbus gets an executive with a clue. If Scott Howson isn't already a walking punchline, he will be soon.

Chatter that Suter has chosen Detroit. Nothing official. And it's twitter, so take it for what very little it may be worth.

edit: And agent says he hasn't decided. So believe who you want.

I am not a Howson fan but I think he is handling the Nash affair just fine. What is the rush to trade him?

I'd take him on the Wild at the right price. Wild need scorers desperately.

    Good deal for Staal and
You must be overjoyed with the Staal signing. The Whalercanes are a force to be reckoned with in the East.

And a good column by David Shoalts on the deal.

What if the person is injured away from work? I tore up my hip/leg in 2011 in an incident away from the job. I had to miss a considerable amount of time and ended up resigning altogether. Never asked for a dime for the time I was away.

There are provisions in contracts that cover this

    I think that's a good column.

But the Whalercanes still need some depth. And if Cam Ward gets hurt and/or misses significant time, they're sunk. Carolina re-signed Justin Peters because he wasn't going anywhere anyway, but the shoulder injury to Brian Boucher means Peters is probably the backup again.

And how much did the Whalercanes trust Peters two years ago? Ward started 74 games and Boucher was signed.

Also need to find a strong third-line center, the sort who can start to replace Brandon Sutter. Easier said than done.

It's picking nits, sure. You do the deal for Jordan Staal - every time. It's an upgrade. The roster is undoubtedly stronger. But there's plenty of work yet to be done.

Trust me, I didn't think you were joking. Someone will take him. He has tantalizing ability, someone out there will think, "I can reach this guy, I can make him care. I can get 50 goals a year out of him."

Like the Leafs minor move, signing Jay McClement, ex of the Blues and Avs to a two-year deal. Worked with McClement during his junior days, he was a great two-way player then but he has become a terrific faceoff guy, checker and penalty killer in the NHL. You need guys like that.

And Brodeur stays put. Two years nine million. Wonder how they will replace Parise when he leaves. My they make a move for Nash.
