The Parise, Suter and Weber contracts I agree completely. Those kind of deals need to come to an end

Any deal signed was signed knowing that the team was going to be asking for a percentage back. They are all deals done in bad faith. The players should not have to take a reduction in contracts that were supposedly signed in good faith. You want to get them going forward, fine.

I see what you're saying. I don't disagree, but the GMs signing the deals have little control over what is going to happen moving forward with the CBA and how the future agreement will be structured. I think that's also partly why so many of the deals were for as much money as they were to brace for potential rollback, but at the same time if there was no rollback, they were digestible deals.

EDIT: Basically what I'm saying is, they aren't pulling a fast one on the players and agents who know full well what's going on.

I don't know if it's been noted yet, but this thread could get very, very long if it runs this entire off-season...

Well it has a shelf life of January because then it will become the 2013 Off-season thread

Talks to resume Friday. Out of morbid curiousity, would love to be a fly on the wall in the room. I really wonder if either side WANTS to reach a deal. Time will tell.

The WaPost's beat writer retweeted someone saying the NHL will announce the cancellation of the rest of the preseason later today.

For what possible reason would the players not want a deal?

We've seen over and over again that if two sides want to get a deal done, it can get done. Latest example was the NFL officials. Sure, both sides have to be willing to give up a little. But if they really want to get a deal done, it can get done.

Of course they want to get a deal done, I think Mark is referring to their motivation to get a deal done now and both sides willing to negotiate off their current points, or are they wanting to wait each other out and see who blinks first. Unfortunately for the players, the billionaire club will win that staring contest every day of the week.

I will set the over/under on the length of this meeting at two hours, and even then I think that might be a stretch.

Beef, I think you highly overestimate Mark's intelligence on these matters.

I agree with what you said. I also think a lot of people are oversimplifying how collective bargaining works. It is not as simple as sitting down at a table and 12 hours later both sides have a deal.

The only reason the NFL referees lockout is over is the there was an actual pressure point in negotiations. There was no way the NFL could allow those officials to get on the field this weekend, especially at Lambeau.

The owners first offer was so ludicrous there really is nothing to be done until they come back to reality. The players are going to have to come down, that is a given but why would they at this point negotiate against themselves?

Elliotte wrote an intersting article on the owners and collusion today.
