No surprise that NBC would do this. Years ago, it used to have many of the New Year's Day bowl games, so they certainly feel the programming void, perhaps moreso because they were used to being the network of note on the holiday.

The 1300 start time isn't bad at all because barring an epic shootout, to use HB's term loosely, it will be over in time for the college football fans to get back to their marathon.

Let me guess because the NHL is having two AMERICAN teams playing in the Ice Bowl, those in Canada think its stupid but what a great idea if its Montreal and Edmonton.

Quite frankly, I think Canadians will happily watch the game. The complaint seems to be the scheduling of the "Ice Bowl" on a day associated with football.

Let me guess. You're a tool.

Nobody said that. Like HC said, it's the scheduling. There is certainly enough reason for those of us north of the 49th to watch ... like Baby Jesus and Crush (go Penguins!).

No, some of us think that the novelty has worn off.

The Edmonton/Montreal game was terrific as was the NCAA game held in Michigan.

Now it's just a little tired and smacks of me-too marketing.

Anyway, on New Year's Day we'll be at our local junior hockey game.

Well, this AMERICAN thinks playing this game on New Years Day is the height of stupidity.

Why should the NHL care what other sports are doing that day?

The NCAA doesn't play their national title game on Jan 1 and league is hoping NBC can be a good partner by actually marketing this event during Prime-Time tv shows and other sporting events well in advanced of the actual game.

The NHL has been begging for attention from TV networks, print and broadcast media since, oh, Day One. The outdoor game is a great showcase for the sport, but to air it against the New Years Day Bowl Games is tantamount to taking a loaded gun, pointing it at your foot and repeatedly pulling the trigger.

Why not play the game on a Saturday in February, when they're not going up against anything? A day when the league can make itself the showcase?

....you do it on New Year's day because most Americans are off work and more people will be at home or parties watching tv.
