    Beefy,

Congrats on the new gig. I am sure you'll do well.

But you're wrong. There's no way that Pronger is better than Neidermayer.

Count me among those that would take Pronger.

If the Ducks are lucky, they'll have both again this year.

No room to talk about a guy with 338 goals, 894 assists and 1,232 points? Why not?

If your talking just offensively then maybe. All around? Not even close

    Sirs, Madames,

Re recent past: I've listened to ex-NHLers having these conversations before. Bourque gets more of respect--lots more--than Coffey. He doesn't edge Coffey in their eyes. It's not close, players in different categories. I wouldn't have thought that from watching them and others but I can tell you that this is just how they look at it. I've never taken a poll of (ex-)players who could form an opinion but I can't imagine that either SN or CP would be any closer than Coffey to Bourque in their estimation.

    Two other sidenotes:

    1. I'm amazed that Potvin isn't in the "best since Orr" conversation. I can tell you he was twice as tough as anybody on this list, save maybe Pronger (not that Denis vs Doogie Howser would be much of a fight) and maybe Chelios (more cheap than tough). Potvin wasn't easy to like, I'll grant you. He could be a dick, I guess, and he certainly doesn't lack for self-esteem. I'd be pissed off too if I had to play two, maybe three, years in the O when I was already better than 99 percent of the d-men in the NHL. But he has the rings and international bona fides (the man in '76 on the best blueline ever). Hard to say of a Hall of Famer and all, but he's under-rated.

    2. Fetisov would be in the mix, of course, if he had come over in his prime.

    YHS, etc

AP story reporting that Buffalo Sabres defenseman Teppo Numminen, 39, needs a third surgery to correct a heart condition.

"After undergoing examination in connection with his preseason evaluation, the Buffalo Sabres medical team has determined that (Numminen) requires surgery to correct a cardiac condition," general manager Darcy Regier said in a statement.

Numminen, the team's alternate captain this past season, already has had two heart surgeries for an irregular heartbeat, including one in the summer of 2006 after the condition forced him to miss one game and part of another during a playoff series against Philadelphia. Regier said this third surgery will be different from the two previous.

The native of Finland has had a heart murmur since childhood and was diagnosed with a dilated aorta in March 2004 when he was with the Dallas Stars. He missed five games because of the condition before being cleared to play.

Numminen finished with 29 points in 79 games last season.

Things keep getting worse and worse for Buffalo sporting fans.

Bills TE Kevin Everett likely lost his NFL career because of bad tackling form.
Bills lose on a scrambled FG try to Jason Elam and Broncos
Sabres were already wondering how they were going to succeed without Briere, Drury, Zubrus, and now Teppo.

Are we doing a fantasy hockey league this season? Or have I missed the sign-up?
