I personally would like to throw Don Cherry's name into the ring

Carlyle's under contract through 2008-09. Given that NHL coaches don't last too long, it sounds reasonable. I think Burke just wanted to ensure no stories about having a coach who could bail after this next season. He had to talk about the goalie situation last year and learned from that. The team does need to know what Selanne is thinking about retirement or not so they can either bring him back or use his salary to get a decent replacement.

No talk about Timmonen and Hartnell to Philly yet? Big move for the Flyers' rebuild.

Yes, but the Bruins just fired Marc Habscheid.

Do you really think he'd take it? He's a teacher more than a coach and I think he's happy in junior.

Beef, what's the word on the new junior team up there? You scored the head scout away from the Blazers. Nicely done.

    A few things:

    1) The reported six year deals Philly gave to Hartnell and Timmonen. Are they crazy?
I understand that they are part of the rebuilding process, but to give them six year deals in the new age of the NHL team salary caps? I am predicting that the head brass in Philly will regret this decision in two years time and try to buy them out (like the Isles did to Yashin).
    2) Is Balsillle or Leipold trying to do a fire sale before the team comes to Hamilton? If this is a sign of things to come for the team, Hamilton is in trouble. :(
    3) New Jersey's loss is Boston's gain. Boston's hiring of Claude Julien is a good thing for the Bruins. I hope that this hiring alone catapaults the Bruins into the playoffs and they fare much better than the Devils so Julien can rub it in their faces. ;D
    4) Pat Quinn's name keeps on coming up as the coach of the Senators. I am not sure that is a good idea.
See what happened to the Leafs and the Olympic team in Turin? He may have come home with the gold from Salt Lake City, but I don't consider him in the upper rung of coaches in the NHL. However, what an interesting story this could become if Quinn goes to the Senators, the Sens win the Cup next year. Another coach that may rub it in a former team's face (forget the Canucks, I am thinking the Leafs ::))
    5) Doesn't anybody find it strange that Jim Playfair has stayed in Calgary as an assistant to Mike Keenan?
Why would you stay there after being the coach? I am wondering if he simply doesn't want to be a head coach anymore or if there is something else we are missing here. ???

I really have to learn how to use the sarcasm font better. I was throwing Don Hay out there as a coach who has flopped in two stints in the NHL – although they were both very short tenures. Jeremy Roenick called him the worst coach he ever had for the year he was in Phoenix. Not going to discredit what he's done in junior hockey though, some guys just can't hack it in the pros, much the same as some guys are just meant to be college coaches in football and basketball.

    Coach yet?

Just saw Truitt has been hired by Edmonton as AC in Springfield. Hope he does well.
