The Canucks' franchise player took an "unlucky shot to the throat''? If I worked for the organization or was a fan, I'd be shitting Kirk McLean today!

I'm not sure Luongo is a guy that needs that much work in a scrimmage or the preseason. Why risk getting him hurt before the season begins?

Exactly! Shouldn't they be using this time to see what their prospects can do in a fabricated NHL situation?

I attended the 3-2 Ducks win over the Kings on Saturday and it was fun to see just how many veterans got extended ice time. Pronger and Sean O'Donnell played together until O'Donnell left with a cut on the cheek, bloodied by Dustin Brown. One guy who looked uninterested in playing was Rob Blake.

That's my thinking. If I work for the Canucks, I'd want to see if Cory Schneider can play goal in the NHL.

It's a tough question, how much do you let him play. They have him scheduled to play 3 out of the 8 pre season games. I don't think half a game in a scrimmage is too much. It is a very fine line. Just by looking around the league it looks like most teams played their #1 in their intra squad games.
How many games do you think he should play?

Schneider did play. The plan was 4 goalies half a game each.
I agree that Luongo does not need much time to get ready but he doesn't. He thinks he needs to be out there as much as possible to keep sharp. It is almost impossible to keep him off the ice

What a player wants and what is best for the team don't always sync up. Luongo has some growing up to do then ...

I think an elite athlete knows a hell of a lot better than we do what it takes for him to get ready for the season. I'm not saying I don't cringe when I see him out there but this is what he feels he needs. Judging by past results I think it has proven to be effective.
We'll agree to disagree on this one.

I'm curious to see how all teams address the goalies in the preseason. The Ducks used two rookies against the Kings Saturday and Kings backup Jason LaBarbera played half and a rookie played the other half.

Well, we know how HNIC people will spend New Year's Day. Does the NHL really think they can actually 80,000 people for this game? At least it will be streamed online.

Fisher gets a five year contract extension worth $21 million. Is he worth that money? He has to play far better to command that salary.

Another note, Hockeyville to be broadcast in an hour special on CBC this Friday night (9pm Atlantic Time). North Bay receives its prize of preseason game between the Thrashers and Islanders.

Absolutely fascinating analysis of goaltenders and how nothing much has changed since the goal crazy days of the Oilers in the mid 80's to the 'dead puck' era of today.

Goals per team per game are down substantially but, interestingly enough, shots on goal and saves remain the same.
