No doubt much of that 80,000 will be made up of Canucks from southern Ontario.

Huggy, I am not convinced because it is holiday season too. While Canucks are hockey hungry/crazy, 80,000 seems like a steep number.

Mike Fisher was great in the playoffs and I think this is a good signing. One of the best 2 way players out there

I agree that he was great in the playoffs JC but I just think that performance isn't just the postseason. It's also the regular season and I really hope he has some fantastic seasons under this contract. Not like players who get contracts and don't perform to expectations.

    Sirs, Madames,

Have known him since he was a teen. Fisher is a very good player in a certain role. I don't know that you win with him if you're expecting him as your 2nd line of offence. You can win with him as your checking line guy.

Two things about the significant investment:

On the upside, he will never ever cause a problem in the room. He just isn't built that way at all. So the idea that he'll just cash out or piss on someone's skates or whatever goes nowhere.

On the downside, he plays too tough for his size and thus has a history of injuries. Seasons of 32, 60, 58, 74, 24, 68, and 68 games. Missed last two games of playoff loss to Leafs in a series they coulda/shoulda won. You're sort of paying him $6-mil a season based his record for attendance and able-bodiedness. That he might be out for 20 in a season is a little scary but something the Senators have to accept going in. That he might only play in 30 one season--that will happen at least once over the term of his contract and for this reason Bryan Murray should attend chapel with Fisher.

    YHS, etc

Very good points about durability but I think it is 4 mill per.

    Sirs, Madames,

You read me wrong. What I'm saying is ... You're paying him the same rate across his projected 58-game season as you'd pay a $6-mil player who doesn't miss a game.

    My apologies sir.
I believe he is the type of player you win with. I'm not sure what he would have gotten on the open market but you can be assured some GM would have overpayed. I think he still has some untapped offensive potential. Time will tell

Sean Burke retired today after 20 years in the game. He was solid for the Devils in the early going and at times at many of his other stops before finishing up with the Kings this past season.

Veteran NHL goaltender Sean Burke has called it a career.

The 40-year-old Burke made the official announcement on Tuesday ending a distinguished NHL and international hockey career.

"I have been very fortunate to enjoy a long and eventful professional hockey career," said Burke.

"In retirement, I will certainly miss the camaraderie with my teammates and the interaction with the fans most of all."

Wick gets bumped in Sweden ...

    http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/news_story/?ID=218609&hubname=

(CP) - The Swedish men's hockey club Arboga has decided not to sign Canadian women's captain Hayley Wickenheiser.

Wickenheiser is no longer trying out for the Division 1 team, general manager Niklas Johansson said Tuesday from Arboga.

After Wickenheiser scored two goals in an exhibition game against Falu last week, Johansson said then that it was "looking good" to sign the 29-year-old forward from Shaunavon, Sask.

But he was less impressed with Wickenheiser's performance in Saturday's exhibition game against Borlange, which is one of the top teams in the division. She played on the club's second line and didn't collect any points.

"In that game, not so good," Johansson. "She disappeared a little bit that game. It was a physical game and she didn't handle it as we expected.

"It was a thin line between her and our own products, young juniors and we decided to let them play instead."

Go figure ... a woman can't withstand the physical play of men's pro hockey ... huh, never would have guessed.
