    1. For the U.S., Buffalo is what passes for a "hockey town."
    2. The Bills look like they're sucking hard again, so there's no need to keep any cash on hand for playoff tickets.
    3. With no major Division I-A football teams closer than Syracuse, a good chunk of WNY has only marginal interest in college bowl games.
    4. It's an "event"... and a chance to tailgate on New Year's Day. To quote our beloved local football coach, "Where would you rather be than right here, right now?"

At least that's what I was hearing from some of the people who managed to get tix, including more than a few Buffalo expatriates who will be flying home for the game from just about every part of the country. I've already had multiple offers to buy our $185 club seats, and they're all from south of the border...

Damien Cox is not impressed with this outdoor game.

That the NHL will try to make this happen in a lakeside city that offers a winter climate that's both unpredictable and often violently inhospitable is one interesting part of the equation.

That it's willing to essentially undermine the competitive legitimacy of its own product by permitting such a novelty event to go forward is another.

Just imagine the other major sports doing something similar.

Imagine the NFL, in a throwback nod to the 1932 championship game between Chicago and Portsmouth, holding a regular-season game in a hockey arena on a makeshift 80-yard field.

I'm with Cox on this. It's a cheap circus act and diminishes the value of the sport.

Second ... there has to be an original idea out there somewhere.

If you go to nhl.tv, you can sign up for a free preview that allows you to watch the preseason games and the first week of the regular season. The regular season costs $149, which is probably the same as it is for the Center Ice on TV.

I'm going to go with the TV package as long as Dish Network offers it. I liked mlb.tv Ok for what it was, but I prefer the TV package.

It's almost impossible to have original ideas when Gary Bettman is your commissioner.

Gary is the one who thought certain U.S. towns that nobody else likes would be a hotbed for the NHL. That's original ... and poor decision making.

I hope someone knocks that puke's lights out this season.

Hot off the presses at CBC and HNIC: New Pregame show

    http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/story/2007/09/20/hnic-changes.html

Does this mean all HNIC people get pay increases because of Scotiabank sponsoring the pregame show?
