Niedermayer is an original thinker -- very rare in pro sports today. While he has always been a tremendous team player, when he is away from the rink, he does things the way he wants. He took on Lou Lamoriello a couple of times in contract disputes, never settling for less than what he felt he deserved.

Scott Oake did a little piece during the Final about how Niedermayer drives a Prius -- not exactly common among wealthy athletes -- because 1) he is environmentally conscious and 2) with those cars, you are eligible for a sticker that allows you to drive in the carpool lanes on California highways.

I've also heard from pretty reliable sources that Niedermayer told friends that if he won a Stanley Cup alongside his brother -- giving Rob one to go with his four -- he would retire. Someone else said Scott wants to go to medical school, but I don't know if that is true.

This is not about money. He will leave the $14 million on the table if he decides to walk. This is about whether or not he wants to to move on to the next part of his life.

    Outstanding tidbit.

Hurricanes sign Scott Walker. I feel better now.

And if Niedermayer retires, it will be sad day for hockey. Definitely not a follower of the athletic herd ... and I mean that in a good way. Elliotte's extra notes kinda nailed that down further.

Don't forget ... Niedermayer played forward until Ken Hitchcock got hold of him in Kamloops.

I saw a lot of Kane this year and he's a terrific player. But I never looked at him and thought, man, this guy could play in the NHL next year like I did with guys like Rick Nash, Eric Staal and Nathan Horton. I suspect he'll be back with the Knights next year.

Next year's draft is shaping up very well with plenty of high-end studs from Ontario like Stamkos, Pietrangelo, Del Zotto and Hodgson. Oh yeah and Tavares if he challenges to get in a year early.

He has 2 years remaining on his contract and you can't renegotiate under this CBA. They would be able to offer him nothing more than his contract would call for.
I believe going into the last year of a deal you can do an extension but I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

I like the fact that Scott is environmentally conscious, and doesn't have to buy the big, expensive vehicles like other sports athletes. I think Scott would make a great doctor but he would have to go through four years of medical school, an internship/residency. If he is in Canada, it will be an additional five years (if he wants to specialize). Then if he wants to teach medicine, it is another 2 years for a fellowship in Canada.

Does he have an undergrad degree? If not, he will have to take additional courses before writing the MCAT and getting into medical school. I am not so sure Scott wants to invest so many years of school, but if he does, power to him! I think it is great for anyone to further their education and want to change careers. It is even better when it's an athlete.

Good to see you're on a first-name basis with him.

Niedermayer is no dummy. He took courses while playing out his junior year. I'm not sure where he stands with respect to his undergrad but the thing about him is, whatever he wants to do, he will do it.

He is a very determined, very intelligent, very calculating individual.

Niedermayer's story is one that needs to get out to the masses pronto. If more stories of hockey players like Niedermayer could get out there, maybe it would bring in a few more casual fans who can identify -- or want to identify -- with guys like him.

You have to give it up to the NHL. Only the NHL would decide to hold its draft on a Friday night and not have the individual clubs host any sort of party for their fans.

The NHL could fuck up a wet dream.

The draft is on Friday and Saturday.

That's my point. Last year, the draft was on Saturday and the individual teams had draft parties for their fans. This year, nothing.
