    Vasicek lands ...

The New York Islanders signed forward Josef Vasicek to a one-year $750,000 contract on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old began the 2006/07 season with the Nashville Predators but was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in February for Eric Belanger. He scored six goals, 16 assists and a posted a -5 rating over his 63 games between the two clubs last season.

Vasicek was drafted by the Hurricanes in the 4th round (91st overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

Good for Joe. Big kid and easygoing, too. Hope this gig with the Isles works out for him.

Oh come on, you're just pissed that Keenan is going to be coaching the Flames next year.
One thing about retread coaches, is that the fan base often has difficulty accepting no-name coaches, especially in big centres. It's easier career-wise if the GM brings in a big name with a track record and have him fail, then for him to go off the board with a new guy with no track record.

But I do share your gripe on both levels about retread coaches and commentators – especially the commentators (Which is one reason I have so much disdain for former athletes who think they can just walk into a booth with little or no prior training, they're keeping someone else down who has put in the time).

I immediately jumped to the same joke when reading, well played. Maybe there will be protests.

Nice to see three players with Devils history get into the USHHOF, one even with Colorado Rockies ties!

I would also think some owners have a problem with hiring new blood.
I agree with you on the athlete thinking he can just step in and do the announcing job, the people that can are few and far between. I do think Ferraro has done a good job in making the transition, Tie Domi on the other hand....

    Beef,
You are correct. I am still pissed at Sutter for hiring Keenan.
    Go Penguins!
I'm also always pissed how often we get stuck with Millen.
Could be worse, though. CBC could pluck Roger Millions out of Calgary!

Don Taylor is worse than Roger Millions. Taylor and Hughson provided the worst commentary ever on NHL 2K5.

Funny column by Allan Maki in today's Globe.

The Leafs (or some of them anyway) had an impromptu skate/practice the other day at the Lakeshore Lions Arena and the dumbass Toronto Sun puts it on THE FRONT PAGE with a photo of Tucksie.

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20070815.MAKI15/TPStory/Sports/columnists

Reporter: "I am here at the Lakeshore Lions Arena, where the Toronto Maple Leafs are staging an informal practice."

TV anchor: "Is it true training camps don't open for another month?"

Reporter: "Yes, it's true, but the Maple Leafs are practising so they can get a leg up on their rivals and win the Stanley Cup."

    TV anchor: "Go Leafs."

And people wonder if SW Ontario can support another NHL team.

Agreed Taylor was horrible on 2k5 but there is no one better at delivering highlights than Taylor. He was even better before he went to Sportsnet
