And New York Fries, too, where my wife always orders the … poutine.

My retirement plan will solely be funded by creating the San Diego Fried Chicken brand.

Tkachuk is good but not ‘great’ or a ‘superstar’ as everyone is saying, mainly bc he has zero acceleration as a skater and was the recipient of some juicy setups by Gaudreau and Lindholm. He’s not afraid of being in front of the net but lots of goals get scored from other places on the ice, too, and that doesn’t make up for his average defence. This deal helps Calgary transition away from selfish players who are in it for stats. MT is going to be playing against far better opposition and his defensive shortcomings will be an issue for Florida.
Calgary wins this trade even if Huberdeau doesn’t re sign as he will be sought after and gives us a year of excellent playmaking as Flames do an on the fly mini retune. Pressure on Toffoli to produce some points and likely Coleman won’t be as snake bit as last year plus Weeger giving Flames more D. Nice work by management in a tough spot.

I think you nailed this. The thing keeping Tkachuk from being an absolute beast is his skating.

I didn't think Calgary would get that much for him, because they had no leverage. But they actually gave up too much even if it wasn't a situation where Calgary had to trade him.

Florida has been a really shrewd team. I know Huberdeau kind of disappeared in the playoffs, but I would have thought him alone for Tkachuk would have been tough to get given that they had to trade Tkachuk. Add in Weegar and that conditional first round pick, and Calgary absolutely killed it. ... like you said, even if they can't get them resigned. If you told me I had to start a team with Huberdeau and Weegar as top line /pairing building blocks, it's something I'd think I could work with...

Elias Lindholm is a superior player to Tkachuk and nobody throws around the ‘Superstar’ moniker when he’s talked about. Too bad, he’s sublime. When I think of all the times MT tried the between the legs move in close and fluffed it vs. his actual goals, about 3, he left a lot of good chances untaken. Just wait until he gets booed for his pathetic efforts in the shootout, a Tiny Mite player could have done better, I mean just awful. In the years he was in Calgary I never saw him ONCE take the puck on the wing and outskate the D man and cut in for a goalmouth try. He’s slow but does have some tricks his old man taught him. Doesn’t make him great. I’d take Brady before Matthew.
Not a lot of people in Calgary sad to see him go.

You obviously see Calgary way more than I do. I took an interest in them last year after their east coast road trip where I saw them, because I loved the way Sutter had them playing. Just didn't give an inch. So I tried to keep up with them.

Tkachuk was a big part of that grinding style, so I can see why Florida thinks he's what they are missing. I saw Florida more last season, and for all the gaudy numbers, they would run up the score against most teams, but against the top handful of teams you would occasionally see cracks. Very little defense in some tighter games, and not much grit up front. Which is what got them in the playoffs. So I can see how they would think Tkachuck addresses their exact need.

The trade may not end up looking that bad because Tkatchuk will probably put up big numbers, especially because he'll be next to either Barkov or Sam Bennett. I just think that that was a huge price. Huberdeau is a star too, and Weegar is not a throwaway player. Then the first rounder, too? If Calgary actually extends either of them, I think they win the trade by a lot. Even without that, I think they turned a bad situation into a miracle.
