Carcillo and Cote on the same line?

Wow, I cant believe Philly would do that. Upshall is enormously popular in the room, and Carcillo, to be kind, isn't.

That's not going to go over well with Richards, Carter, et al. They loved the guy.

Apparently for a 2nd and another conditional pick.

I hear what you're saying. I just see the same teams year after year after year perpetually rebuilding and selling off people. Sort of like the Expos in baseball in the 1990s.

At some point, I think management has to identify guys that are the cornerstones of their team. If you want to keep them when they become free agents, make a competitive offer. Hey, if they just simply don't want to play and live there, go out and sign someone who does.

Right now, YOU are in the playoff chase. Probably not going to win the Cup any time soon, but when you haven't even been in the field since 2001, just making the playoff is a step up and maybe, just maybe, sell some tickets.

If you can get something comparable in return, fine, make the deal. but don't just firesale someone for this fear they'll walk in the summer.

I think Gillis is real reluctant to give of picks or prospects. The Canucks aren't blessed with a lot of prospects.

I can't see how this is an upgrade for Philly, especially giving up a draft pick on top of it.

So would the deal be more palatable if it were a 2nd or 3rd rounder instead of the 1st?

Who is saying firesale, other than the Coyotes? Why would anyone in their right mind let an asset go--especially one that hasn't shown any indication to sign a long term contract--for nothing?

Flyers had to shed cap. Probably weren't getting people to bite and had to make this deal to put their optimum lineup out there. You know it's killing them to have Giroux in the minors. They sacrificed chemistry to stay within the cap. Briere's contract is killing them. They better hope he performs, and big time.

Bottom line, if he's not going to sign, which would be their preference unless you're a contender, you have to get something for him. You will still have that cap space in the summer and young players or picks to either trade or have in your organization.
