I don't think it's that Barrie and Koules are in trouble money-wise. It appears that the Lightning want to drop some salary to become eligible for more revenue sharing money, they just want some more of the pie.

I'm not completely sure whether the league will let it go through, they haven't approved it yet.

    UPDATE: And now they have.

Bertuzzi goes on IR after having arthroscopic knee surgery on Tuesday.

    Salary move?

Maybe, $1.95 million contract, maybe that's why Sutter was able to say they're under the cap.

Anaheim's activity today was no surprise. I didn't expect Niedermayer to go and Pronger was likely going only if there was something really great in return. The Ducks did, however, dump several smaller pieces and it makes sense as they prepare for a total overhaul of the roster for 09-10. Can't remember right off, but I think they have 11 UFAs (prior to the trade deadline) and likely trimmed that with their flurry of moves today.

Devils basically got better with Brodeur back. Adding Havelid on Monday is a sign that they wanted to add a defenseman, but not do too much else. Hope they're able to sustain their run as is.

Indeed he was. He'll have to clear re-entry so for now he's in AHL Philly and unlikely to move up because of their cap problems.

They had me worried there that they were not going to do anything.

Strange deal in that it was as complicated as it was and to come in under the wire like it did. Love the move, basically turned on top six forward and a pick into two top six forwards which the Oil were in desperate need of.

O'Sullivan will play on the top line with Horcoff and Hemsky
the Second line will be Penner/Cogliano, Gagner, Kotlik.

Looks far better than it did 18 hours ago when Liam Reddox was in the top LW spot. Penner will probably be jettisoned in the offseason. even if he is straight up bought out.

I like COle and the effort he brought, and it looked like he was finally starting to find his game with Gagner, but now he'll go back to Carolina and hopefully give Staal the kick in the ass he needs. He's killing my fantasy team damnit.

Do I dare say Leopold was the better of the Flames two big moves? He'll take pressure off of Phaneuf, didn't cost much, helps solidify their D and suppliments their offence from the back end.

OJ cost a lot and there are no guarantees he will pan out with the bad attitude reputation. Plus with the ton of injuries the Flames have (Primeau, Langkow and now Bertuzzi out for a month) do you load up the top line with Iginla, Cammalleri, OJ ala Ottawa Senators, or do try to spread out the wealth?

I think there are enough strong personalities (Iginla, Conroy, Regehr, Phaneuf) to keep Jokinen's attitude in check ... or at least I hope so.

Either way, one of Cammalleri and Jokinen likely are here only until end of season.

Echoed here. Thing is, not only was Williams not having any injury luck, but also netted a fifth-round pick, which will help offset the loss of the pick lost to acquire Jussi Jokinen a few weeks ago.

Nice going, JR (not SJ's JR). Shouldn't have EVER traded Erik Cole in the first place ... would have really cool to simply undo the deal and send Joni Pitkanen back to Edmonton and keep Justin Williams. Wonder what Eric Staal thinks now ...

Rutherford has now brought back nine players if you include the preseason invitation to Jeff O'Neill and a head coach. What's next? Irbe coming out of retirement? :)

Sounds like Sather and Messier trying to recreate the Oilers in Manhattan in the late '90s. How'd that turn out? (Hi, hockeybeat! :D)

For one year, it worked out marvelously.
