Minaya tried to get Linebrink. The talks fell apart. He can come through with Oliver Perez, but he can't come through with a quality setup man. Let's remember that Heilman has now failed in two disparate roles with the Mets. That might mean that he's just not worth a shit. But Minaya doesn't see that.

The Mets could have had someone like Jeremy Affeldt or Ron Mahay, certainly not world beaters but left-handed specialists more trustworthy than Feliciano.

    Absolutely.

ERA then WHIP and then BB/K ratio, and then IP.

The ERAs under discussion have negligible variances. But other categories contain massive differences.

If we accept the premise that only part of the season should be used when looking at the ERA of each pitcher, which is kind of shaky logic. It should mean something that Jurrjens has a 3.06 ERA for the season, while Nolasco's is 3.91 (as is Pelfrey's).

Mets put John Maine on the DL today and sent Billy Wagner home from the road trip to have stiffness in his forearm checked out. Considering that Met injuries are almost always worse than the club originally lets on, I'd like to wish the Phillies and Marlins the best of luck in the two-team race for the NL East.

Why, oh why, won't the Yankees trade for Washburn or bring up Kennedy and not let Rasner pitch anymore?

He gets two quick outs in the fourth and then walks .185 hitting Reggie Willits. Two batters later it is 5-0 and Teixeira is coming up.

The Angels are going to win the World Series. With their pitching and just enough offense, they are going to be tough to beat in the postseason.

And the Phillies play the Cubs eight times still.

Who is G. Blanco and why does Ben Sheets keep walking him?

I originally stated that Nolasco had flipped a switch his past 10 starts (with five games with at least 8 Ks after none in the previous 54 starts) and that I think he is now the third-best pitcher in division.

Yeah, it's not really breaking news that Jurrjens was much better in April and May.

I think Hawk actually threw something in the booth during KC's five-run second. Tee-hee.

And if not for some punk named Longoria, Mike Aviles would be getting some serious ROY love.

Robinson Cancel, the Mets' tubby third-string catcher, just got thrown out trying to steal third.

    With two outs.

    Robinson Cancel.

An unfortunate name for a member of the 2008 Mets.

Never mind the unanswered question why the Mets are carrying three catchers.
