All the Red Sox had to do was live with Manny for three more months (right through the World Series), not pick up his $20 million option (which is what Manny/Boras want), offer him arbitration and when he signs somewhere as a free agent they get a first-round pick and a sandwich pick.

Instead, they gave away Manny and two prospects (OK, Hansen is more a suspect) for a good but hardly great player.
That by any measure is a god-awful deal.

And, yes, Simon, Bay is a good player ... nothing more.

Chances are, Bay's a better player than anyone they would get with a couple of extra picks.

That is what leads me to believe that things were worse this time and Red Sox management really felt they couldn't trust him going forward.
I don't see any other reason than that to trade him. Given their front office success I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I'm not giving them the same benefit of the doubt. Theo put Manny on waivers in 2003 -- had anyone picked up Manny, would the Red Sox won two World Series in four years? Or one?

Theo's been trying to ditch Manny for years, and other GMs have saved him from himself by not taking Manny (his contract in 2003 was still way too steep for most teams compared to the market). If the Red Sox fail to make the playoffs, they won't be able to point the finger at Manny -- it's all on them now.

Christ, you could have eliminated two dozen posts...

OK... back to the regularly scheduled programming.

The Marlins' rotation is second in the NL to the DBacks'.

You mean you didn't like that little third inning, with eight runs scored with two outs?
