Looking ahead to later tonight, the Rays are about to hit a west-coast swing that they need to succeed in. Four at the Mariners, three at Oakland, three at Texas.

They're 23-28 on the road so far this season. If they do well, say go 7-3 or even 8-2 on this trip, fans will feel a lot more confident about that September schedule.

If they go 5-5 or worse, there could be some doubt creep in.

Actually, considering Reyes has the highest BA on the team, I would have let him hit in that situation -- tie game in the ninth, man on 1st, nobody out. Why ask a .300 hitter to give up an out when you've got an unproven hitter, Argenis Reyes, on deck?

The decision to have him bunt and then the subsequent pop bunt made me sicker than Gerut's home run. If you're going to have someone like Reyes bunt, he doesn't necessarily have to square.

What was the hullaballoo between Bud Black and the home plate ump? I was in and out of the room and caught only the tail end of it.

Jason Bergmann looks like he's swinging an oar.

    Hey spnited,

Wanna trade pens? The dogass Tiger pen for the shitass Mets pen?

Seems like an even trade. :D

You know the Mets' pen better than I do. What do you think?

Yeah, the last thing you want to do is have Reyes square around. If he's going to bunt for a base hit, fine, but why have him sacrifice?

Not sure what the deal was on Black. He apparently wanted to double switch, but either told it to the ump wrong or the ump recorded it wrong. In any case, he didn't allow the Pads to make the switch they wanted.

Remember when it would take more than Brian Schneider to command Milledge? There are a few bright, homegrown spots in the last decade for the Mets. But, and I'm sure this is the same with every other club besides the Rays, for the most part, it's been bust after bust for New York.

But I still miss the days of Bobby Jones, Bill Pulsipher, Paul Wilson and Jason Isringhausen.

At least Izzy and Jay Payton have found success.

The countdown clock is running for Jim Leyland to stomp off and quit, as he's stomped off and quit every MLB managing job he's ever had.

That's the most emotion a Padres manager has expended since Larry Bowa.
