Sometimes, around here, we ask questions just to see if anybody has a good answer.

The answer is, he has no excuse for hitting a wall. Perhaps he's just been ineffective for a stretch.

Ah, OK. I've seen these threads closed at 30 before, which was why I was wondering why it hadn't been closed yet lol. Thanks, Gutter!

Having watched quite a few of those starts, I think he hasn't hit a wall exactly, but his control is all over the place. He's getting deep into counts, and throwing 20 pitches an inning because he's not putting batters away quickly.

He was staying over his pitches a lot better in that first month. Since then, if I'm not seeing things, his arm slot has slipped a bit, and as a result he's become a little more erratic, leaving more pitches outside and away from right-handed pitchers than he had. In turn, that has lead to more 2-2 and 3-2 counts.

Now, that lack of control hasn't meant he's walking more people, as evidenced by the numbers, but he's getting into more counts where he has to throw a strike. That's helping the hitters, who have a better chance of knowing where the pitch is coming, and what pitch (Fastball) it's going to be.

I don't think the Sox wanted him as much as they were trying to block him from the Rays.
