Non-journalists cheering in press box. Should I say something?

I (and about 100 other writers/broadcasters/game employees) was watching the 1993 BC-Notre Dame game in a press box before a game I was covering. When the BC kicker(Gordon?) made that field goal to win for the Eagles, the place went absolutely, foot-stomping, chair-throwing berserk.

The only time I can remember any kind of cheering in a press box I've been in.

Applause you heard was probably from boosters, not media.

A lot of those college press conferences and luncheons are packed with boosters.

If I had been there, that would not have ended the conversation.

Next time you go to a UK basketball game, take a guess at the over-under of UK beat writers/stringers on press row going nuts when Wildcats make a great play or get on a run. Forget the jerks getting freebie courtside seats--I'm talking actual members of the Fourth Estate.

Funny you should mention Cincy. Had a couple of facebook comments last week from a college SID making their firs visit to the Bengals' box, and was surprised at the amount of cheering going on. The comment was seconded by a journo who was there, then refuted by a friend who offered "we should be able to cheer" because it had been so long since there was something to cheer about. Ugh.

I'd politely ask them to tone it down since you are working and on deadline. If it persists, I'd take it to a team official, so the fan is hearing it from more than just a single source.

Going back to Homer Bryce at the begining of all this----I wonder what would happen if after that, you went up to him and called him a total POS and to GTFO!!

Which is worse? The fanboi cheering that some people insist on doing in the press box? Or the nattering nabob of negativity that whines and complains about the local team constantly?

Had one of the latter this weekend. I was about ready to jam a spork into his skull.

I watched Lee Roy Jordan get politely told to be quiet by the UA staff during a Bama-Ole Sis game several years ago in Oxford following his cheering outburst.

I believe he left the box shortly after that.

The Michigan Stadium press-box PA guy gave the following announcement a few weeks ago as there was some hubbub from journalists watching the end of Central Michigan's upset of Michigan State.

"Just a reminder that this is a working press box and that no cheering is allowed ... but we'll make an exception for this."

Yeah it would have. How the hell do you comeback with that one? I'd have laughed like hell
