See, but there are legitimate people who disagree with the "serious problem" part. That's the exaggeration. We don't know half as much as we don't know. Yet there people like Gore who have come to drastic conclusions loaded with hyperbole. I got the sense that the scientists in this story wanted to say it's hyperbole, but they were tempering their remarks because they don't want to feed the people denying that there is a trend.

I don't want to retype stuff I've typed on other threads... Here is something I posted to a different thread... I think it's kind of in line with the link that started this thread:

We've got a global warming trend. Anyone with a brain will conclude that if they look at the evidence.

What is the crisis, though? Do we know what the effects, if any, are going to be? If it is indeed a man-made phenomenon (likely, but not a certainty) is something that took decades to create even reversible? What is the best course of action, even if we can conclude the future of humanity is it stake? How much do we have to hurt our standard of living to make costly changes some people are advocating (without tangible proof that those steps are good ideas)? What will the effects on our economy be? If as a society we do make changes, are they futile, given that the developing world's economies are growing exponentially and they are going to keep polluting the air with carbon emissions that might easily render our efforts meaningless (while our economy suffers and theirs prosper)?

Getting back to the "crisis." You can't tell me that we are not witnessing a trend that poses no dangers, and that even if the effect becomes pronounced enough to warm the climate by a degree or two sometime soon, that we can't easily adapt, as humans have done for thousands of years to changes around them. That is at least a possibility, if not as likely as the earth exploding in five years because a hole in the atmosphere.

It's reasonable to have concerns. And it's reasonable to try to learn about this and determine whether it's a danger. And it's reasonable to explore changing our behaviors preventatively. But far too many people are taking a quantifiable trend and skipping reasonable thought to "We have a crisis on our hands." We really don't know that to be true, though. And even if you can put percentages on the chance that it is a lurking crisis, you still need to weigh the benefits of various courses of action to the negatives, in order to make smart decisions. A lot of people don't want to try to determine the scope of a potential problem and think it through reasonably. And Al Gore is feeding that sort of uninformed thinking with hyperbole instead of reasoned analysis. That is politics.
