The Antelope Valley has a long military and aeronautical history. Edwards AFB is 40 miles away from Lancaster. A USAF plant is in Palmdale, and a spaceport is in Mojave.

JetHawks is a good fit for the community's identity.

Why are you being such an asshole to Toby?

I lived in Palmdale and a few other places in California worse than Palmdale. Pretty much any city in the San Joaquin Valley is worse than Palmdale.
Like Buck said, what do you got against Toby?
By the way, I remember when the JetHawks stadium was called The Hangar. Much more appropriate.

    Blythe or Needles, anyone?
It's a bit unfair to knock the people of the Antelope Valley. For the most part, they're hard working Americans looking for their slice of the 'Dream. The biggest employer is the government. Military families, including one-star Generals, live in the the Valley and includes some of the best engineering minds in the country working at Edwards Air Force Base.
Others commute. They commute 90 minutes each way either through a snaking canyon road or on an oft-conjested CA-14. They do that so they can own a home in a county that sees three-bedroom, 1,600 square-feet homes for $600,000+ even in this economy.
Sure, there are challenges. But, where can you go today without them?
To degrade is myopic. To disparage is disparaging to thousands of middle-American communities.

I have nothing against Toby. Don't know him or her. Never heard of him or her until this thread.

I stated an opinion about few people outside the area will care about the content. And I said the paper's Web site is hideous. I missed the rule where only people with 28,000 posts or more can state an opinion.

Some of you folks sure jump to false conclusions. Anyone who says I was an "asshole" to that guy is an "asshole" himself or herself.

I got the AV Press mixed up with the AV News, which is the Adult Video News.

I thought-- wow, people are really up in arms that the porn trade publication is charging for content.

You also missed the one about if said opinion is unfounded or misguided it can be pointed out.

Somone wanting to state another opinion is fine. But deciding I have something against somebody I never heard of before and throwing out words like "asshole" is definitely unfounded and misguided too.

    Well said, Fish.

I'm one of those people. I drive 65 miles each way to work every day. Sometimes, it takes me 65 minutes to get to/from. Sometimes it takes me nearly two hours-plus. I'm used to it. I've got a good job and I live in a hell of a house that if you uprooted it and plopped it down 45 miles south, it would be close to a million. I paid less than half of that.

And Gutenberg, you're way out of line.

There are a hell of a lot worse places to live in California. I could rattle a dozen off the top of my head, but there's no reason to bore anyone. Those who know, know.

What everyone is busting your chops for -- and rightly so -- is the bullshit line about living there. You want to bust on the web site? I'll be right behind you, because I've been on record here -- and in the newsroom of the AV Press -- as saying it is the worst paper web site in the history of the medium.

But lay off Toby and the rest of the folks who live there.

I've been through there -- the area is a dump. I know someone who lived and worked there -- she hated the area.

But since you are the expert, let's play pretend and update the best places to live in California list.

    1. Palmdale
    2. Lancaster
    3. Hesperia
    4. Boron
    5. Barstow
    6. Mojave
    7. Santa Barbara
    8. San Diego
    9. San Luis Obispo
    10. San Francisco

I didn't see anything personal in gutenberg's opinion on the AV or the Web site.

As far as Web positioning, I think the fact we are the only media that covers and analyzes decisions by city councils and water districts and school districts in this part of LA County places value on the content that you can't get anywhere else. It's different from trying to corner the market on Dodgers coverage and charging for information that you may be able to get from another source. While there avenues to find out JetHawks scores and quick recaps, there aren't other media getting quotes and monitoring player moves on a daily basis.

I don't know what changes may be ahead in terms of Web site presentation.

    Thanks, Toby.

I'm very glad to see that you understood there was nothing personal against you or the newspaper or the Web site.

I'll be the first to compliment you if you can get that Web site improved!

    Good luck to you.
