    Electives.
I wanted a couple of easy classes to fill out my final semester schedule. So I took a 1 (or 2)-credit (half semester) basketball class and a 1 (or 2)-credit (half-semester) softball class.

We needed two hours of gym credit to graduate (college class of 1976).

Played basketball, softball, tennis, Hardyball (a form of intramural football), swimming, etc. Real stuff. So yes, we showered afterwards in the Robins Center auxiliary guy locker room.

Not sure college P.E. is generational.

UGA still requires one semester hour of physical education to graduate with any bachelor's degree. Before 1991, it was five quarter hours required.

I remember taking softball and basketball "classes" there (during the Harrick years, no less.)

We had those types of classes, but they were electives and I don't think I'd heard of anyone but kinesiology majors taking more than one.

When my gym classes first started to shower (seventh grade), yeah, it was a little weird for the first week or so. After that, everybody had seen whatever they were going to see, and after that nobody thought much about it.

I showered for PE in seventh and eighth grade in Pennsylvania back in the early 1980s.

    No one uses showers now.

Schools will install 500 gallon water heaters just for showers and they are never used. They are not used for classes during the day or for varsity sports at night. Shit, I know a couple shower rooms used for mat storage by teachers.

I wonder what would happen if some asked to shower.

That's a damn good question and not my problem. Let the principal that allowed it short that shit out.

When hurricanes loom, one thing we do is check to see if the showers work in case the school turns into a shelter because we know damn well they are not tested during the year.

That's actually a pretty good question: have high schools built since the 1990s been designed with much smaller locker room/shower facilities, since they are rarely used any more?

I would figure the budget-cutting chainsaw brigade would go to work.
