They tried his agent, why is that not enough?

    Go drink Caster oil buddy.

I was just asking a question, that all.

I think it would have been best if they had waited until they had actually talked to Ankiel about this subject. They would have been better able to represente the full side of the story. At this point it looks like it was a media hype machine driven story. Maybe, Ankiel declined comment until he had talked to his lawyers, as it is a law enforcement issues. Given that newspapers are now generally the last part of the media to scope a story most of the time it is paramount that both sides are represented and that all facts are presented before giving approval for an article. I don't necessarily find fault with the writers but more the editors for approving and/or pushing this story forward without all the evidence or representations of both sides.

No, it's a chickenshit way out. Go to the source. Go to Ankiel. They didn't attempt to do that, which bothers me.

But you know, 99.99999999 of the time, he'll say, talk to my manager/agent/etc or no comment.
And you don't know any attempt was not made. You can guarantee any one worth anything in this biz called Cards PR, etc.

Unless you work for the NYDN, you don't know if they didn't try to get Ankiel.

No, you're not asking a question.
You, who have a future in journalism as the editor of the Weekly Reader, haven't spent day one in the business, yet you know how to do everyone's job better than them. Your act is old, it's tiring, it's frustrating.

If they mentioned in the story they tried to get a reaction from him and he didn't or wouldn't respond, I probably wouldn't feel the way I do about the piece.
The point is they didn't make an attempt which means they were going for the knee-jerk sensationalistic reaction. They got that.

The point is you don't know if they tried to get him or not. What we do know is that they got the agent on the record. It's absolutely fine.

Yes it's fine to say that you tried to reach the other side for a comment. For many places, it wouldn't be fine. If I were the editor in charge of the story I'd want to make an attempt to reach Ankiel, not a mouthpiece. If he speaks, fine. If not, fine. At least you have a record of going to the source that the story is about.

The agent could have gotten Ankiel in touch with the reporters if he wanted.

But there are protocols to reaching him.
    Team PR or his representative.
The only other way is to ask in the clubhouse, and that way, then you get a no comment for sure.
Otherwise, I'd doubt, that with that type of accusation, that the Daily News didn't try to reach him for a quote.

So, what do you figure Boots... they should have called the Cards PR guy and he would either have given them Ankiel's cell number or put Ankiel on the phone with them? C'mon, you know better than that.

If you talk to the agent and the agent says "no comment." you have effectively reached out to the player.
