NY Daily News on Seinfeld

Discussion in 'Anything goes' started by Moderator1, Jul 9, 2008.

  1. I always thought the weakest episodes were a lot of the early ones.
The Chinese Restaurant, the one where Elaine's' older boyfriend has a heart attack, the one where Jerry babysits the dog (Farfel).
The last episode, while far from great was hardly the worst.

There is no way I could pick juts one as the best.
My personal favs are: the Kenny Rogers Roasters, The Backwards Episode, Festivus, The Library Book and the one where Kramer decides top stop getting mail.

Seinfeld also featured so many future stars. They sure had an eye for talent.

Shouldn't the bucket be on your head?

My best friend's favorite episode is The Chinese Restaurant: "For $50, I'll put my face in it and blow."

Georges rant in the restaurant episode was great

"You know we're living in a society..."

I love The Chinese Restaurant episode. Me and a buddy were in Vegas a while back and every time we got a blackjack, we'd yell "Cartright!" (Of course, we were drunk the entire time we were there.) We get back to his place in San Francisco, turn on the TV and what's on? The Chinese Restaurant episode.

The post-Larry David shows were just different, not bad. The plots stopped being based on familiar stories (for the most part) and revolved around the characters' eccentricities and the writers' desire to create these intersecting storylines. For the people who only liked the show because of its real-life riffs, then yes, it changed. I loved the last couple seasons because the episodes were hilarious. We were all familiar with the characters and the writers took some great liberties.

There was a ton of "inside baseball" writing, most hilariously in the "Jerk Store" episode in season eight. I think every writer can appreciate George's frustration.

GEORGE: (frustrated) No. No, no, no. You're not helping me.

KRAMER: Look, just tell him you had sex with his wife. That'll kill him.

GEORGE: (shouting) I'm not looking for another line. I got the line.

KRAMER: Look, George, just think about it. You know, you're married, how would you feel if somebody says to you that they just had se...

GEORGE: (really animated) Alright, alright. You see? This is why I hate writing with a large group. Everybody has their own little opinions, and it all gets homogenized, and you lose the whole edge of it. I'm going with jerk store! Jerk store is the line! Jerk store! Yess!

    ...

GEORGE: Don't you understand? It's not about him. To have a line as perfect as 'jerk store' and to never use it. I, I couldn't live with myself.

ELAINE: See, there are no jerk stores. It..it's just a little confusing, is all.

GEORGE: (adamant) It's smart. It's a smart line, and a smart crowd will appreciate it. (shouting) And, I'm not gonna dumb it down for some bonehead mass audience!

I really like Seasons 8 and 9. Most of my favorite episodes are from that time. You're right, Leopard boy, we all knew the characters so well, that it became kind of cool to see them do out-of-the-ordinary things. It was refreshing.

Agreed. I never had a problem with the finale and thought getting all the side characters back was a blast.

Did you guys ever see the outtakes of that episode? Off hand, I'd say they didn't use 10 or 11 of the characters brought in to do scenes just because of the time. There was some really funny stuff on it.

I think they left two of the best ones out (I'm in the minority on the final episode, so I don't mind that they omitted that one)

    1, The Opera
2, Kramer resurrects Merv Griffin soundstage in his apartment.
    3, The final episode.

  10. The Merv Griffin set was awesome!
    Another of my favs.

The pilot (The Seinfeld Chronicles) should be in the running for worst episode. Until Elaine showed up, the show was a bit adrift.
