NY Times "Feel Good" Jets Coverage

Explain to me how our thinking differs on X's and O's. And I'm not sure how the Times' coverage of sports drives a reader to the tabloids. All of the papers have questioned whether or not Vilma was/is happy in the 3-4. Everyone's written the Pennington comeback saga. What is so different about the Times' coverage?

I want what Karen gave me today a sophisticated football story that would make Dr Z proud. I wanted to learn how Vilma's play responsibilites have changed playing in 3-4 vs 4-3. Vilma made his money the past few year playing a "react to flow" type MLB. Now he has to play a much more discipline type of game that many times puts him on back side of play. I had wondered how he felt about that.

it's been pretty well documented from DAY 1 how vilma's been adversely affected. maybe it just took karen 16 weeks to figure it out.

Seriously. How he's been affected AND he how feels about it. Doesn't matter if you had asked him during week 2 or week 14, Vilma'll say the right things... but never with overflowing enthusiasm. It's more, "I am willing to give coach the benefit of the doubt and I am studying hard" stuff. It's an OK story. But it didn't take anyone--least of all a serious Jets fan--until week 16 to realize 1) the team is playing a 3-4, and 2) The guy who roamed a wide middle of the field and seemed to be in on every tackle last season is not in on as many tackles this season.

    Boy tough crowd.

Everyone could speculate before but now there is also a body of work to look at .

I didn't mean to be that tough. The piece itself was ai'ght piece. If you're a Jets fan, you got a feel for how serious Vilma is about football and how he's rubbed off on Kerry Rhodes, who has probably been the star of that defense this year. It was fine.

But how has Elmo been affected by the switch to the 3-4? That's what I need to know. :D

Thanks, shockey, but your earlier point is quite valid.

More cutting-edge Jets' Xs and Os upcoming from the NYT:

CB Aaron Glenn is a bad fit in the cover-2.
WR Lam Jones can't run pass routes.
QB Joe Namath doesn't feel comfortable in Lou Holtz' veer.

HB - a little late for you to be jumping on the band wagon -- don't ya think? Go back and read your previous posts on thread-- you seem to think the Times coverage is fine.

And nothing's changed. Everyone wrote training camp stories about how the 3-4 could affect Vilma. This was a nice story that was updated with his stats, fresh quotes and how he and Rhodes study opposing offenses.
