I think they're going by different levels of canonicity: stuff that was mentioned or shown on screen in the movies is pretty much carved in stone; everything else is flexible.

(Although Ep. 9 jacks with some pretty major storylines of the whole saga)

    Wrong Death Star.

Ah yes. One of my finest moments: nearly getting kicked out of Alamo Drafthouse because I was apparently drunkenly yelling to my friend, "THIS DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE."

It made roughly the same amount of sense when I was sober.

Oh, it made enough sense: if you were ok with the fact the plot line of Ep. 9 essentially chucked the whole plot line of Ep. 6 (and thus Eps. 1-6) down the toilet.
The whole idea of Ep. 6 was supposed to be that Anakin/Vader sacrifices himself to put an end to the Sith. And then it turns out that he didn't ... really.

That is one way to look at it. Another is that he sacrificed himself to save his son and to end the Sith reign over the galaxy, which he did. Of course, that was only a temporary end.

In the end, he stalled off Palpatine, for I dunno, 35 years, which, since the battle between the light and dark side is supposed to last thousands of years, is barely a blink.
It was supposed to be a galaxy-shaking moment when Anakin chucks Palpy down the reactor shaft; instead it ends up being just a minor inconvenience.

In the old timeline, it took another 100-plus years to “wrap up” the Sith (the Legacy comic books from Dark Horse), and even then the Sith had a plan for what would come next — which, of course, we’ll never get to see.

It still bugs me that they did that, just tossed all of those stories out. Canon matters to science fiction fans. They know this. It is why they went out of the way to acknowledge those novels and comic books as canon for all those years, so they would sell. I enjoyed the new Jedi Order, Luke marrying Mara Jade and having a child with her. Han and Leia having three children, who then have a big impact on galactic events. It wasn't all happy endings. Han Solo, in particular, faced some horrific tragedies, but the novels just felt more true to the arcs of the characters from the original trilogy than anything we have seen in the Disney era.

The Thrawn trilogy was so well-written that I'm glad they never actually made movies with those characters. Otherwise, I'd be extremely disappointed that they didn't exceed my expectations. Unlike George Lucas' attempt at dialogue.

I need to read it again. I haven't in a long time. Never bought them, so off to Amazon I go.

I'm still miffed that Lucas didn't go the entire Happy Days Star Wars American Graffiti route.

    Ron Howard as Luke
    Cindy Williams as Leia
Donny Most and Anson Williams as 3CPO and R2D2
    Wolfman Jack as Chewbacca
    Henry Winkler as Lando Calrissian
Erin Moran as Jabba the Hut
    Paul LeMat as Darth Vader
    Richard Dreyfuss as the Emperor

Now, I'd pay to see that movie.
