    No one will ever know, because the first American to be awarded the Victoria Cross was the unidentified KIA selected in 1921 to be the Unknown Soldier of WWI.

    Pershing got all the French medals.

    Calvin Ward was the most-decorated solider of WWI.
    He got medals from Portugal and Montenegro of all places.
    Of course they go alongside the CMH, Silver Star, and two Purple Hearts.

    Not really, the answer "the unknown soldier from WWI" would have been correct.
