You're right, the name makes the difference. And fact is, Michigan is the winningest college football program all-time, so to lose before 110,000 at The Big House, that's something else.

The fact that a I-AA finally beat a ranked I-A top 25 team isn't a surprise. The fact that it wasn't a Rutgers or Hawaii or someone like that who just happened to be there is the surprise. This was a top-five team preseason with all the tradition most schools could ever dream, which is why it's so stunning.

Re: Hart, his Heisman stock should not drop one bit. The kid did all he could to carry Michigan, despite all its missteps. They trailed when they didn't hand it to him; they rallied and took the lead when he got the rock. Not a coincidence.

Lloyd Carr is the Tubby Smith of college football. He's a far above average coach, he's just not a good fit for the program that he's running (or ran, in the case of Smith).

Lloyd Carr just has a timeshare in San Antonio that he wants to make use of.

Good point, and apologies for same. As to Carty's cameo on ESPN:
"Not just the worst loss of the Lloyd Carr era, possibly the worst loss in Michigan history."

Vegas didn't have a line on the game. But if it did would we all be talking about point shaving right now?

Was Satuday's game not a perfect example of Michigan controlling what they wanted the score to be like.

Tripping on the 2pt conversion, Henne's interception. Missing assignments on the kicks. Tackling the guy so he didnt score after the block kick.... hmm let's see.... oh yeah poor blocking, dropped passes, fumbles, and missed tackles.

We'd be talking about it but there'd be no reason to. They just got beat.

Michigan went into this game thinking all they needed to do was show up and when they actually had to work for the win they weren't prepared to do so. Tackling the guy after the block was more a product of "I'm not going to let that fucker score."

Plus when Hart got that thigh bruise I guarantee you that the thought process on the sideline was, "let's save him for Oregon." By the time they realized that was a mistake it was too late.

Nine pages of posts on this damn thread and I still believe what I said on page 1
This was not that big of a deal.
It was a friggin' upst, for sure, but how many times have we seen near-upsets when a "Big-Boy" almost gets toppled, but hangs on.
We then quickly forget whichever team it was that "almost got it done"

App. State won two straight 1-A titles and is getting good athletes these days.
Lloyd Carr is a good coach. I think there's too much romanticizing of this one being done.
Michigan was played on even terms by a good team.
And no, it ain't the "biggest college upset of all time"
    Many more were bigger.

Couldn't disagree more. That was a national-title contender punked at home by a I-AA school. While there may be instances of times it almost happened, you can count on one hand -- if not one finger -- the number of times it ACTUALLY happened.

App State getting good athletes? They're getting nothing more than the leftovers from 119 I-A schools, for the most part. And they're having to fight other I-AA schools to get them.

And "many more" were bigger? I'd love to see that list.

    OK. I'll take that.

But, if Arkansas State defeated Texas, would we be talking about that as THE upset of the day or would Michigan, playing a much stronger team, still got all the attention?

This may not have been the all-time upset, but it's at list close. Eighty-five scholarship players to 63? And I'll go out on a limb and guess none of Appy State's recruits in the last 15 years have been Parade All-Americans. More likely they were in parades, playing the tuba.

No, they were off the radar, less than stellar kids. I can give you examples of kids who weren't on recruiting radars until the end because they lived in Podunk instead of Houston, Dallas, Miami or Los Angeles. And considering where Ap State is, it won't be confused with civilization.

Did you watch the game? Their speed was D-1 speed.
