Lloyd was viewed as a stopgap after Moeller quit/got fired.

His tenure being as long as it has been is a minor upset.

A minor upset? According to who?

Bo wouldn't have trusted anyone else with his team which is why he hired a Michigan coach instead of doing an external search. If he wasn't happy with Lloyd they would have fired him after his first two season when he had four losses (both times). Consecutive four loss seasons did not happen for a long time prior to that.

Lloyd was not viewed as the long-term solution when Moeller quit. He was a stopgap.

Moeller's incident caught a lot of people off-guard, and he had been considered the guy to be there for a decade or two.

And Lloyd was hired on an interim basis at first. He was not given the job right away.

I still have no idea if he should be fired or not, although I'm leaning towards yes.
On one hand, you know what you've got with him. You know you're going to be a national power every year, though maybe not a title contender. You'll get great talent and you'll always be in the mix for a Big Ten title.
Is it worth giving up a pretty good thing for a new coach and the unknown that will bring?

Didn't work all that well with Notre Dame, did it?

The biggest one I can think of off the top of my head is Cutcliff and Ole Miss. Think they wish he was back? (there's probably 500 better examples, though.)

If Bo still were alive, would Lloyd have been fired?

True. Did work very well for Ohio State. Good point.

    No.

And Bo wasn't the AD when Carr got promoted.

Well, with that one loss Lloyd Carr just ventured into Gerry Faust territory. Ya, there's always the chance Michigan could screw it up, but it would be a fresh start.
