Last year of the Al Clark era, if IIRC.

And Tech started that 10-game win streak at home against Miami, not at the OB. I remember because we rushed the field. 13-7 on a cold, dreary day in Blacksburg. And that Cincy game was brutal. Another rainy slopfest. It was right after Tech lost at home on a Thursday night to B.C., which is Tech's Thursday Kryponite.

Also, I'd counter Junkie's point on Michigan's 1997 Rose Bowl win, only because I think that 2000 Stanford team that played Wisconsin was probably the worst Pac-10 rep in the last 30 years.

So, Captain Kirk, we must not forget that Michigan scored nearly more points than all those other 1-AA teams combined.
We aren't giving the Michigan offense any credit here, folks. They had a bang-up day on most fronts.
This is a Michigan team that can indeed win 9 or so games this year.
This horse-shit attitude on the board toward Lloyd Carr, wanting to see someone get fired over a loss to a pretty damn good football team - well, it just goes to show the strain of idiocy that pervades todays sportswriting frat.
Y'all are the same douches who'd go out and rub asses with Lloyd were you to be teamed with him at a summer golf tourney.
Couldn't bear/wouldn't dare say those rude things to him in person.
Just ask him how good he thinks his team will be this fall. That's all you'd do.

Nobody on the SportsJournalists.com picks league went with the visiting team here. Nobody.
Yes, it was one of the biggest wins in App. State history and a great college upset all-around.
But I for one am not astounded by the outcome and I think there have been more compelling upsets through the years.

And, A Different Okie, read the third paragraph of the story I linked earlier and see what the writer called Cal-Davis' win over Stanford.

The one I saw later had it at 70-30; must be the Michigan people got on the phone/Internets.

Oh, and there was allegedly one in Columbus, too: 97% - 3% for him to STAY.

I agree that with the ESPN-ization of things, many are too quick to deem something the greatest ever.

However, this is a rare exception where it is warranted. There is simply nothing this compares to in the modern era of college football.

I fucking care about Mt. Union and their polaxing of Averett!!!Everyone in Division III thought that was jacked up of the Purple Raiders to blitzkrieg a NAIA school. When they were up 52-0, put in the third stringers, don't keep the starters in there to score three more times.

Oh, I didn't know you were talking about the second sentence in your last paragraph. Sorry, carry on.

Oh come on. This is an illogical argument. They're only "unranked" because they lost. Any team App beat would therefore be an "unranked" team.
This is putting the effect before the cause. I think you just created a wormhole somewhere.
    Biggest. Upset. Ever.

Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree here. I didn't imagine Mich's pass d would be so incredibly bad, but, even though I wouldn't call them the favorites any more, I wouldn't be by a 1 or 2 finish in the Big Ten for Michigan. I think they're still a talented team.

  9. Hopefully I won't out myself here, but I spoke to a National Championship-winning coach yesterday, and he said it was the biggest ever.
I'll concede he knows more about the game than I do and agree with his assessment.

    Was it this guy?

  11. No, it was a former I-A coach who won a national title.

Did he say if anything else was close, or if it was far-and-away the biggest ever?
