Here's the difference: Palm Springs to Phoenix can be done averaging about 90 mph on the freeway. There are rarely any cops. It can be done in less than three hours. Quick and easy.

El Paso to San Antonio must be done averaging 70-75 mph (damn state troopers, they WILL catch you). It will take you no less than eight hours.

And on a personal preference, I'd rather look at bland desert mesas for a couple hours than bland green hill country all day.

Top 5 complaints of a geezer (moi) on the topic of today's youth:
    5) I'm not a 'sir.' I work for a living, thank you. 'Sir' is retired and living at home with Mom.
    4) If you utter 'It's all good' one more time, I'm going to take that wallet chain, weld it to your tongue piercing and pull. Hard.
    3) Four o'clock means four o'clock. Not 4:15 p.m., not 4:30 p.m., not 6 p.m., dammit. Nice 'bling' -- it'd be nicer if the damned watch of yours actually worked.
    2) I blame each and every one of you for every song released by Fergie, Beyonce or any band with any similar reference to "Boyz," "Thugz" or any other phonetic catastrophe. I'm looking at you, Ne-O. Your name is Neal.
    1) Girls (especially you 'big' girls) and fellas -- If you look hard enough at the clothing store, I'm willing to bet you could find jeans that fit. Girls, please stop wearing jeans in which said geezer can tell whether or not you're pierced. Fellas, pull your goddam pants up. Get a belt.

Fuck it, I'm going to go get a haircut.

Dools: I loved Ball Four, and read the follow up, "I'm Glad You Didn't Take It Personally". But I think The Long Season is a better book and the other books on my list had more of an impact when I thiink back.

Well, Ball Four pretty much invented the coverage of athletes' personal lives in mainstream media, so I would call that impactful.

Different Seasons wasn't a novel - it was a collection of four shorter stories - novellas I believe the term was. So although one story from there might count (like Shawshank) the book as a whole doesn't count since I specified novels, intending the meaning of one book, one story.

I'd replace Firestarter with Needful Things, but I can't argue with your No. 1. Great book, especially the unabridged edition.
