I can't pick a top five for Dylan songs, but if I did it would have 'Visions of Johanna' in it.
    And maybe 'Isis.'
    And maybe 'To Ramona.'
    And definitely 'Dirge.'
And possibly 'Simple Twist of Fate.'
And probably 'Bear Mountain Picnic Massacre Blues.'
    And ...

See, that's why I don't make Dylan lists.

Valleri would probably be my No. 6. Too bad Boyce and Hart didn't give I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight to the Monkees. The Monkees' harmony singing was much better than Boyce's and Hart's. Nesmith had a lotta unsung stuff like Papa Gene's Blues, Kind of Girl I Could Love and You Just May Be the One.

'You Just May Be the One' is a very cool song.
I also dig 'Listen to the Band.'

When they took more control of their career, they did some interesting stuff with their own writing and a few other people's, but when they needed a hit, Boyce-Hart, King-Goffin, and Neil Diamond to the rescue.

dools ... man, I feel like I'm telling a kid there's no Easter bunny ... you know that the Monkees' harmony singing WAS Boyce and Hart, right?

Well, I have no doubt they may have contributed, but they didn't bury the voices of Dolenz, Jones and Nesmith in the mix. Tork, on the other hand....

EDIT: You know what it was? They weren't allowed to PLAY their instruments. That's it. Sorry, dools.

I've heard Dolenz' and Jones' vocals through the span of the Monkees' career (including the reunion tour in 1986), and they can be heard distinctively on even the early stuff. Clearly, it was Davy Jones singing I Wanna Be Free. The protest was about Kirshner asserting that the Monkees played their own instruments (Nesmith and Tork could).
