As an Orioles fan, I'm all for moving Machado now if the haul is right. It's clear there's no chance he'll be in Baltimore after 2018.

 

They also get revenue sharing money which they can choose to pocket if they wish.

The Deputy Dawg isn't wrong here, of course there's an advantage to being able to spend more but the advantage is not even close to what it use to be. Organizations are much smarter than they use to be with not handing out idiotic long term deals to older players.

I'll take baseball's system over any of them, if you want to spend, you can and you will get hit with the luxury tax. If you can't afford to compete, than move or sell your team. The Marlins are profitable and a disgrace.

Baseball has never been healthier.

 

The pile jumper isn't completely wrong here. Baseball reduced the advantage large markets have in baseball, but that advantage is still significant. MLB is healthy. It just isn't as healthy as the NFL, even with the massive public relations issues that have been hurting television ratings.

And that is in part because of a perception which is based in reality. Every team has the same opportunity to succeed in the NFL, but that is not the case in MLB. The Patriots aren't buying their way to the top. They are outsmarting the opposition. They are earning their success.

 

So the built-in advantage is fine because some markets can choose to lose money every year to keep up with the others? That's bullshit. There are certainly some owners who do a terrible job in baseball and that is part of the equation as well. I've been critical of the Pirates, for example, for failing to spend what is necessary. They built a nice team that was a contender, making the playoffs three years in a row. But instead of making the financial commitment to take advantage of that window of opportunity, they went the other way and cut payroll even as they raised ticket prices and, predictably, the team fell apart.
