First thought: Concussion, and was literally out of his head when he shot himself.

I had a friend who suffered several concussions in high school/college who, several years later, killed himself under baffling circumstances. He had, however, been in a fight earlier in the evening and I always wondered if he got "unwired" before killing himself.
