Oklahoma State coach Gundy blasts Oklahoman columnist

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Precious Roy, Sep 22, 2007.

  1. What I heard was that it was OKState booster-types who stood in the back of the room. I've seen it before, it's fucking pathetic, and undoubtedly a permanent "tradition."

As a former SID type, I think some of you are giving Gundy too much credit. It is my experience that very few coaches plan something like that. They just go off the handle. The very few who do are the ones who are smart and can think more than 30 minutes into the future. Having worked in the Big 12, I don't think Gundy fits that category. He just went nuts on an instinct. My opinion.

  3. After Dodd's column, someone started a poll: "Do you side with Gundy or Dodd?" I think Gundy was winning, 88-12. On my team's message boards, there are lots of "Bravo!" and "That's who I'd want my child to play for!" and "It's about time someone put these 'journalists' in their place."

Bullshit like this makes me wonder why I'm spending my life covering these 45-year-old children and writing for their lunatic fans. I've had it.

I read that and could not help but think of Dustin Vaitekunas ...

  6. Would someone mind posting her original column here? I just tried registering for that 1860's-vintage web site and it won't let me. Thanks.

The amateur athletes argument is sill when talking about Big XII football. There are perks that come with being a big time football player, more than just room, board etc.
You're a celebrity. You get rah-rah professors that grade a little softer. The ability to sleep with a different co-ed every night of college if you want to. Prefential treatment when you're looking for a job later in life. But you're under more scrutiny on and off the field. Like it or not, that's what you signed up for.

From the column: "what she wrote was borderline libel"
    Really?
    Where?
And if 75 percent of the column is wrong, then what's wrong?

I thought the column was funny . . . and the coach's reaction was priceless.

If I were Jenni I would have been smirking through the entire tirade, but I wouldn't look for or expect an apology. I'd just laugh about it until the day I retire.
