naw, sc. stupid is as stupid does ... isn't that right, chili?

  2. OK. Let's say a college kid at a Big 12 school is the star QB for two years. The coaches tell you off the record the kid is soft (a word that NEVER appeared in the column, BTW).
Would you be out of line to write that the backup QB had "more grit?"

    Excuse you.

Do you think because I am female that I don't know what it's like to play baseball? That I've never faced a baseball pitcher, never took a line drive in the shin, never got injured in baseball? Because baseball is for boys and softball is for girls?

You would be very wrong. I played baseball for several years.

There are many girls and women who play traditionally male sports, either in male leagues, coed leagues or female leagues. There are women who play football.

To say you know for a fact that someone has never done something based on their gender is exceptionally short-sighted.

Except when he sees the OSU players stretching during their pregame warmups.

Man, you guys are vicious. A guy comes in here wanting to get into a lively discussion and it turns into Carlson's blog. You guys are as viscious as those readers were to her. I like this board.
I'm going to have to bring my fellatin,' sexist, masturbatin,' athlete-lovin' ass over here more often. Good stuff.

I would be out of line if I used a worn-out cliche like "more grit."

That's bullshit and you do sound sexist.

Sports columnists have every right and should ask that question IF there's a legitimate basis to back it up. The problem with Carlson's piece is she's missing the sources and factual evidence, and instead makes some leaping assumptions about this kid's character based on some seriously speculative evidence and bullshit "rumor is" type sourcing.

I thought it was particularly unfair to suggest that the kid's mother allegedly being seen giving him food was somehow evidence that he was an immature, weak mama's boy. Any sportswriter should think twice about bringing in a kid's parents to attack his character, but if you're gonna do it you better have something better than that. I seem to remember that college kids will never turn down a free meal under any circumstances, and visiting moms are equally apt to offer it. The inference she asks us to draw from that is completely unfair.

Doesn't mean it deserved Gundy's irrational rant. It obviously did not. But criticism was warranted.

Keep digging your hole, pal. Let me know when you find China.

So... unless you've been injured in a football game, you have no business questioning the severity of a football player's injury? Is that how I'm reading you?

  12. So now your problem with the column is not the facts, but the writing.
    I see...
