I said it before and I'll say it again:

If you aren't covering a Big 12 program like it's the pros, then you're doing it wrong.

No, you're reading him wrong. He means, if you're a chick, you can't write about anything.

  3. Women can't write about how rape is wrong because they've never had a man's sex drive. Therefore, they don't know what it's like to have to supress that rather than knocking a woman over the head and dragging her back to your room like a caveman.

Come on, Chili, clarify your position on people who didn't play football covering football. I'm enjoying the witty repartee of my colleagues here but I'd like to hear your enlightened perspective.

    Fair enough.
Either way. I think I've been grossly misunderstood. I am certainly not condoning what Gundy did, or how he did it, but I am condoning that he had a reaction. And unlike some people on this board, I think he would have had the exact same reaction had a male columnist written it --- well, not the exact same, he probably would have left out the 'mother' bit. I just think the column was incredibly cruel. It set out, apparently, to ridicule a kid and poke fun at him for being soft. I don't think that's her job. Just my opinion. Apparently, the VAST majority of people on this board, at this hour, disagree with me. That's fine. I thought I explained my rationale behind the "especially a female sports writer" line in my initial post, but in hindsight I probably should have left that one out. It struck a serious nerve and in no way was I insinuating that females couldn't write about, cover or opine on football. There are plenty of very good ones that do. My point was I can't believe any sportswriter would have the gall to question someone's ability to play through pain. In any sport really. It just seems completely ignorant on so many levels. Get a quote to say he's soft. Compare his injury with another player who had the exact same ailment, but played. Just dont use rumblings and rumors and chicken feeding to try and prove a point.

Chilidog, I see that you're playing a little CYA right now, but I will grant that your last post does have good points. You didn't start out that way, which is why you got ripped.

Just to add my two cents, I don't think Gundy's rant had anything to do with Carlson being female. And you know what, I'm glad. I'm glad Carlson got the same reaction that a male writer would have. That means it wasn't about her being female, wasn't about her 'not understanding the game' or any of that gender-based bullshit.

As to what she wrote and the nature of Gundy's reaction, we can debate that forever. But I really don't see a sexist element here. Until chilidog showed up.

Wow, I just skimmed the past two pages, and it seems like someone's vying for Most Ridiculed Newbie of the Year.

Not that you have to be a newbie to be ridiculed. I am every day. Just sayin'.

Sidejack: Did anyone notice the sportscenter replay omitted the applause?

It's the most mind-boggling part of the video.

Thanks cadet. Like I said, I shouldn't have included that in my initial post. That was a mistake, and I'm big enough to apologize for it. I promise I was in no way implying that women shouldn't cover football. In actuality, my main point was that sportswriters, all sportswriters, should stay away from the playing-with-pain topic in a opinion piece. Because honestly, when its all said and done, we don't have any authority to do so --- unless we have quotes.
And to think, I almost signed on here with my real name.
    Good Lord.
