And how does that anecdote do that exactly?
What does it say about his leadership?
    His attitude?
His sense of entitlement? ("Do you really think the kid is thinking, 'I will not feed myself! I am too good to feed myself!"

I have to agree that the column was weak. Too many rumors. No comments at all from Reid. And if he was off limits, as somebody suggested, that fact absolutely has to be in the column. If you're going to make such a big deal out of the mother feeding him, you have to ask about it. Or at least explain why you didn't ask.

That said, the coach was definitely out of line. The worst part is the comment that he is a man, which is basically saying Reid is not a man. I'm sure that wasn't the intent, but that's how I took it.

No, but it could speak to him being spoiled and expecting things to come easy to him.

Romanesco has a link to Jenni Carlson's response to all this...but the site seems to be down, or the link is bad, or something. Anyone have it?

About the chicken: There's a perfectly beautiful way to show the scene without adding the exclamation point of her opinion....this was not it. It's a good detail about the guy, but she makes such an issue of it you have to wonder if he's wearing a bib and using a Teletubbies fork. To me, this would have been best left as a draw-your-own-conclusion detail.

I can't believe I'm reading this on a journalism board. Fuck yes it matters if it's the truth.

If she made it up, she's no better than Jayson Blair or any other writer who has been busted for fabricating quotes or stealing material.

I'm not saying she fabricated any part of the story and I'm not defending Gundy but to even suggest it's ok if she lied is the height of stupidity.

This should make all these bars and convenience stores that have sold alcohol to folks in their 20s and 30s shiver. Since I'm 38, I'm counting down the months until I get it legally.

If you think it's okay to assassinate the character of a 21-year-old based upon rumor and a single anecdote simply because he throws a football and earned a scholarship, you need a refresher course in journalism ethics. I can't put it more simply than that.

Jenni and the paper need to apologize for their mistake, and Gundy needs to apologize for his apparent false allegations of inaccuracy.

    Whoa, Heini...

When did Carlson make a factual error? Did I miss something? She should not apologize for writing things that were true, even if the column wasn't very good (which is wasn't).

I never said she made a factual error. What I said was that it was a case of poor ethics.

The kid signed on the dotted line to play for a school that fancies itself as one of the nation's major universities. Can't stand the heat, leave the kitchen.
