I hate the "How dare you! He's just a kid!" implication that people start yelling as soon as a college kid gets criticized... It's bullshit...

Well, I just hope that the Cowboys go out and win the next one for little Bobby Reid.

So it's okay to attack the character of any college student? Or have we sportswriters decided that athletics is so important that we're immune from the basic rules of decency and ethics that hold true for the rest of the world? You can hate it all you want, but I've yet to see any argument that explains the circumstances under which a person wouldn't react negatively to having their character dragged through the muck. What next? Can we say that he's gay because we saw him hug another guy? If Jenni wants to make judgments about a person's mental character, I suggest she obtain a license to practice psychology.

Please. He's getting compensated a fair amount for his services, and the university is making a fair amount off his services. He is a professional enterprise in all but name. And you wanna run around worrying about his feelings? Sorry, HM, you're off base.

Just so I'm clear, your argument is that it's okay to treat someone unethically if he has a sports scholarship? Does this hold true for academic scholarships as well? Or are we just picking on athletes today?

  7. Though I hate the beer, I am with HeinekenMan here. Re-read this:
The column was dogshit. I am in no way, shape or form condoning Gundy and his completely off-base public reaction to this fiasco. But before this board becomes the personification of Al Sharpton rushing to the Duke campus in the corner of Jenni Carlson, let's remember that it was a dogshit column and 99 percent of the people on this board would not have written. This is not an "us against them" issue.
And, as Alama said: "Don't you guys understand that shit like this fucks with your credibility?"

If you presume the column was "unethical," you also are calling Carlson a liar. Are you really calling her a liar?

Aww, poor athletes. Most kids on academic scholarship aren't playing games in front of tens of thousands, then being followed by hangers-on and earning cache toward their post-college life. (Half these jocks who get jobs after college get them because of their name and who they know, not because they got a degree from Pokey U.)

Gundy was wrong but that doesn't change the fact this was a horseshit column.

Well it certainly changed the fact that it was an exponentially much better read horseshit column. So his tirade had that going for it.

Just because the column is horseshit, that doesn't mean the column was "unethical." Heineken Man apparently thinks anything questioning adults who are participating in a big-time athletic environment is "unethical."

How do you know she DID have an actual source? It's pure speculation that she talked to a coach, too, or that she had any legit facts. That's why the column was so irresponsible, because we as readers have wiggle room to speculate of who the sources are or if they even exist. AT LEAST prove they exist, or don't waste the ink.
