Leather, Songbird specializes in seeing beauty in ugliness and profundity in the trivial. It is his strength as well as his weakness. Sometimes, he sees something good where there's actually a steaming pile o' poo. Songbird has many fans on the board, including me, but I think he'd be the first to admit that criticism isn't his strong point.

I have no problem if someone writes a column questioning a college player's attitude and toughness. But if you are going to write that column, support your argument. Problem is, the writer here essentially supported her argument two ways:

    1) By pointing to the fact that the player's mother fed him chicken after a game
    2) By saying that "rumblings and rumors" suggest that he didn't play through pain.

    It's both weak and irresponsible.

If you are goin to call the kid out, call the kid out.

That said, it would take something extraordinary for me to question a player's motivation as far as injuries are concerned. Too many instances of Teddy Johnson and Wayne Chrebet have occurred for me to feel comfortable doing that.

Stephen A. Smith is an idiot. Just saw him on ESPNEWS along with Drew Rosenhaus. They asked both about the Oklahoma State outburst. Smith contradicted himself. He said the column was fine and Gundy was way out of line. Then he said it's fine to rip on college athletes until it gets personal, then it's off limits. Huh, Stephen A., I thought you said you read the column? It was a personal attack on quarterback. Maybe he should stick to the NBA.

Finally, something we can all agree on.

I'm with you on this. Can't understand the reaction, because she didn't call the kid a druggie or a thug.
And when he got on the team bus after Mommy fed him, shouldn't he have received copious amounts of shit from his teammates? And when your offense needs to score with less than two minutes, do you have confidence in a guy who gets fed by his Mom?

I think Paul Johnson needs to start worrying whether the fan in question actually does work at McDonald's (don't know many McDonald's employees who are necessarily fans of the U.S. Naval Academy football team) or whether the fan in question was a retired Fleet Admiral who could have his job in two seconds.

Amazing, the arrogance of these pricks.

Mike Gundy goes ballistic and gets praise for sticking it to the media.

Paul Johnson insults his team's fans with the McDonald's comment and basically tells them to fuck off, and they don't respond.

    Dumbasses.

Without this ridiculous rant, 30,000 people at best would have known about this chicken-fed quarterback. And 29,990 would have forgotten about it by lunch.

Now, approximately 120,000,000 people know this momma's boy is spoon fed his box lunch at 21 years old. And the coach committed career suicide by becoming a sound bite gag for the next couple decades.

    Good job, Gundy.

And I hate the "you must not be a mother to children" angle. It is cheap. Senator Boxer did the same thing to Condi Rice. There are other ways of making your point.

On his radio show they said it was the college newspaper that the column appeared in. That was priceless to hear.
