    Hardly.
At least not where Wilbon is concerned. Or the ilk of Wilbon, whatever that is.
Sorry, sportschick, if that's your experience. It's definitely not the case everywhere.

I have withdrawn my use of the word unethical, but I'm still calling it character assassination.

Could you at least admit that whether Jack Welch hires some college running back has absolutely nothing to do with this topic?

Character assassination? By calling him soft? When he's apparently not taking it well that his coach benched him?

    Spare me.

She didn't question his ethics, his grades or his character as a human being. She said he couldn't take the pressure of being the starter.

Some people can't -- in all walks of life. That's not character assassination. That's acknowledging reality.

She was probably trying to sleep with Reid and got shot down, thus the column. That's how female reporters do it, ya know.

Either you forgot the blue font or you're just completely ignorant.

I'm guessing he thought the sarcasm would speak for itself.

So has Gundy said why the kid was benched yet? If Gundy's done nothing else, he's made a name for himself and let the whole country know about the player in question. If I'm the player, I'm not sure I appreciate it.

On that note, has there been a response from Reid?

I had an SE try to pull that crap with me because I got tired of covering the fact that he was staffing his son's basketball games - much to the dismay of said son - for two years.

He told me, more than once, that "when you have kids, you'll understand." Uh ... yeah. ::)

I haven't heard anything from Reid. Hopefully, he gets through this ordeal. I can't imagine the emotions he's facing. I just hope we don't wake up on Wednesday to hear that the kid was found dead in his dorm room. I'm sure such concerns aren't lost on his family and friends.

Speaking of which, I'm about to write a great column about what a slut one of the girls from the college volleyball team is. I heard a rumor that her late-night sex romps are affecting the team's performance. Also, I saw her kissing a guy one day.

Look, HM, you've made some valid points. Don't shit on them by pretending that any sports journalist who chooses to report on off-field matters is a muckraker. That'd be as disingenuous as someone else saying "HM doesn't want us to report or editorialize, he just wants us to proof the SID's press releases and run them in lieu of independent coverage."

He and I share a lot of the same thoughts on this subject. Therefore, I'll be accepting only six-digit offers for my column-writing services, and only those offers that arrive with a bouquet of fresh lilies.
