Oklahoma State coach Gundy blasts Oklahoman columnist

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Precious Roy, Sep 22, 2007.

  1. Wicked is referring to the doctrine of "fair comment," which stipulates that anything anyone does in the public eye -- like a college football player playing football -- is open to criticism. It's a cornerstone of our profession. Anyone who thinks there will be a libel suit out of this is overreaching. In Oklahoma, the quarterback of one of the state's two biggest football schools is unquestionably a public figure.

Bottom line here: The state's top columnist has to write a piece on why the OSU quarterback gets benched. Has to. She went about it clumsily. Her sourcing is suspect at best. But no one -- Gundy, Reid, anyone -- has specifically refuted anything. Until they do, she's the lead horse in this race, regardless of who you think is right or wrong.

  2. All of the column is about stuff he did off the football field. I heard the coach on the tape flat out dispute several points ... not sure what he's saying now but he was disputing them on the tape.

Thank you, Gauchos, for giving me a refresher course.

It's been several days and no one has refuted anything. Which means the story isn't fabricated. Like it or not, the young lady may have stumbled upon something.

actually, gundy said in his tirade that the kid didnt threaten to transfer and that reid is a good kid who does the right things ... i would say that takes care of the bad attitude stuff.

but i dont think accuracy was ever the real issue. gundy acted like it was. but it wasn't. this whole sorry episode is because of that idiotic chicken detail. that's why mom called coach. that's why coach called out writer.

you can say the kid's a bad quarterback. you can say there are rumors about his attitude. all that's fair game. but the whole chicken thing is pretty much calling him a wuss. and that's where the problem begins. why do you think gundy kept talking about her having kids one day?

I thought he wanted to impregnate her, but seriously, the chicken soup bit was over the top. In some ways, I think he really lost it because a female wrote the piece.

I'm pretty sure a coach isn't going to say a player has a bad attitude, even if he does. Especially one who is as overprotective as Gundy.

  8. Sure thing Mr. Uninspired Reporter with spider webs and dust bunnies clinging to his wall. I'll agree to disagree while I stare at the awards hanging on my wall. :)

Exception: Baseball coaches. (The ones I've dealt with, anyway.) God bless them!
