Oklahoma State coach Gundy blasts Oklahoman columnist

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Precious Roy, Sep 22, 2007.

  1. Carlson follows up.
    I like it.

If you have a few minutes, check out the reader comments at the bottom of Carlsen's piece. She is taking a beating from the faithful fans.

Edit: If this is a d_B is apologize. I saw it on USSportspages.com this morning and assumed it was from today's paper. Sorry if this has already been posed on this thread.

If Gundy is saying Reid never tried to transfer, then I am 99.9% sure he is lying. Which, to me, calls into question his entire tirade.

Again, I don't cover that program, but news of Reid's attempted transfer is all over the Big 12. I've even talked to the coach of the school he tried to transfer to over the offseason.

  3. I'll back off on my insistence that there will be a lawsuit - I based a lot of it on the coach saying 3/4 of the article is wrong and pointing out specifics. From what I'm hearing now, that's all BS.

    Oh well.

  4. Golic and Greenie were discussing the story this morning.
    Nothing worthwhile came of it.

On the bright side, Gundy has lined himself up to be the White House press secretary for the remainder of the Bush Administration.

Sorry, again, I must strongly disagree. This column was worse than the first one for a number of reasons, and some of those users comments hit the nail on the head.

First -- from what I gather there is no media access outside of Monday's and no practices are open to the media -- so I'm skeptical of the use of the word "observations" as a defense for your laziness in the first article when you relied on "rumors" "rumblings" and "speculations" in order to rip a college football player.

Second -- As much as you are trying to milk your newfound psuedo-celebrity status, you ARE NOT or at least SHOULD NOT be a part of the story. That's not our jobs. And further, if you want to be a part of the story at least admit that when you fuck up or you make a mistake -- which as much as it pains me to agree with Whitlock -- this was clearly a mistake in judgement by her.

Third -- if you are going to say these are "facts" from sources at this point you need to lend more credibility to who these sources are. Not name them, but give some better idea that they aren't just a few fanboy losers on message boards, which, as Whitlock points out, it seems very clear that some of this column's sources were just that -- rumblings and rumors from fanboys.

Sources can mean a lot of things and just throwing that word out there without qualifying it makes it seem even weaker as a defense.

She had a chance in this column to get it right, to solidfy her first column and instead decided to take the approach that "he was mean to me and he's a bully" and it comes off like she is a little whiny baby -- just like the quarterback she is ripping......and she solidifies her status as a whiny baby in all those news clips on her web-site where they ask her questions about it and rather than answer it she says only "I stand by the facts" which is weak at best.

Finally, there is a lot of talk about gender around here which is unfortunate because it is not an issue (and never seems to be until a woman columnist is ripped). These threads fill up daily with critiques and rip jobs of guys like Stephen A. Smith, Lupica, Wilbon, Mitch Albon, TJ Simers, Plaske, Bill Rhoden -- every day these guys are ripped to shreds by people on these threads and just about every one of them have had public confrontations with coaches or players.

  7. You all seem to be failing to consider one thing -- what if (and I'm fairly sure this is the case) Carlson's facts are correct and Gundy is lying when he says they aren't?
Maybe she could have sourced them better, but everything she wrote as "rumors say" or "stories told on the sly" are things all of us in the media have heard and circulated amongst ourselves for years.

Lawsuit? About what? While I didn't like the original column, there was absolutely nothing in it to merit a lawsuit...

Liked the follow-up column... I hate it when coaches tell you something is "all wrong" but won't give an example...

Did you not hear Gundy's rant? He said "That isn't true" several times. I think he already told her what wasn't accurate.

I'm still stunned that so many people on this board continue to defend what was, by any unbiased reading, a shit column.

Her follow-up column was weak, weak, weak.

  10. That is not what I got out of her reaction at all.

I thought it was pretty straightforward:
The coach said three-fourths of her column was wrong. He didn't address which parts of her story - if any - were incorrect, inaccurate, omitted, skewed or out and out wrong.
When Carlson had the opportunity to get Gundy to clarify his statements, he said he didn't have too.

To me that says a lot.

If I'm Gundy, and the column is wrong or there are inaccurate things in the column you better believe I will point them out - or have SID point them out - especially at a press conference.
By taking the fifth-grade route with the "I don't have to" statement I think Gundy is acknowledging - by omission - the column is largely correct.
In other words he popped off Saturday in typical defend-your-players-to-the-hilt fashion but when it came down to nitty gritty Carlson was right and Gundy gave up the fight.

I have a 21 year old son who plays university football and he's not a child.

Gundy's attempt to classify his 21 year old QB as one is insulting and demeaning.

Gundy should be publicly reprimanded by the university for his outburst. Gutless puke.

  12. She's pretty arrogant at the top, which made me very uncomfortable. She's not taking anything away from this experience except that she was right and they are wrong - that's dangerous whether you're a male or female columnist.
